Another Day, Another Run

Another morning bright and early as I head down to the jogging track again. Still haven't quite acclimatise to the local heat yet. :(

Had a heaving  heavy kopi session with OneLittleTwit the night before and then set up to run early next morning, forgetting to get some water into the system. Good thing it was just a short run or I could gotten into dehydration trouble.

Wasn't feeling 100% so decided to take an easier pace, only to realise that I get more tired trying to deliberately slow down my running. In the end, I gave up and just resumed my natural "wheezing-gazelle" pace.

Class 95 was much better with more music and less talking.

Bird Park 2006

Golly! I haven't step into the Jurong Bird Park since I was a kid! It was great bringing the kids and share with them the joys of my childhood memories. I am quite impressed with the Penguin enclosure which was a great leap forward since the days when I was a kid. I dare say it is ever better than the Aquarium in New Orleans shortly before it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Sunrise At Home

Woke up quite early in the morning and decided that it was the perfect weather to go for a morning run, after looking out the window.

The first half of the run was comfortable with a light breeze over cool temperatures. Then the sun started coming up and I was slowly feeling the heat. Towards the final kilometer, I saw a chio bu up ahead and I used her as my target to overtake before the end point.

Boy, can she run!!! I was cutting her lead slowly and steadily as I picked up my pace and it wasn't until the last 400m before I caught up with her and passed her like a gazelle cutting through the morning draft. What she didn't see was the guy underneath the gazelle panting and wheezing like his heart was about to explode. Must 保持形象 mah!!! Hahahahaha!!!

Anyway, the run was over before I knew it and I learned a few things that morning.

1) I can't read sms and run at the same time. So I can't reply either.

2) Morning radio sucks! They talked too much. What happened to the music?? I am bringing my MP3 player next time.

3) Treadmill is easier that running on real ground. Some more got aircon one.

4) I wilt under Singapore heat.

Position Available: Security Guard Dog

This scruffy little dog showed up at our factory just a couple of days ago. A quiet and well-behaved dog that just wandered into the factory. The unusual thing about it is that it headed straight for my security guard house and sat there as if to assume its guard dog position. It doesn't bark nor growl at our guys. I think the dog knows that the workers are part of the factory.

There is definitely something special about this dog and the timing is impeccable. What better way to welcome the Year of the Dog by welcoming this dog into our factory?

While I would like to take this as an auspicious sign, I was mercilessly scoffed at by hitomi for being pang tang.

Well, be it mere coincidence or divine interpretation, we are keeping this dog.

Nurse With 180 Patients

I read about an article, on the $traits Times last Wednesday (18 Jan 2006), about a certain Nurse Grace Leong who negligently prescribed medicine to a patient, whom the latter was allergic to, and causing the death of the patient. Before I could blog my response to this case, somebody beat me to it with a letter to the $T Forum (See Below).

It is indeed unfortunately that some one died as a result of her negligence. However, one must note that this is a nurse who had to handle 180 patients by herself. What was the management thinking?? Surely anybody with a pinch of common sense would tell you that something is very wrong assigning 180 patients to a single nurse.

Under the circumstances, one cannot help but offer Ms Grace Leong some sympathy. It was definitely not about the money for no nurse would accept such an ardous assignment, if the motivation was purely monetary.

Here we have the possibility of striking her off the nursing registry. Just great! As if we don't have a shortage of nurses already. Granted that a life was lost in the process but surely there must be a better solution. Grace Leong has a set of skills that would contribute greatly to society. Patient Care Giving. It seemed like a waste to just throw it away like that.

I don't mean to belittle the unfortunately death of the patient. I don't mean it that way but I am sure some one out there who totally don't get my point and would point the finger at me accusingly and ask how much was the dead patient's life worth?

My answer is simple. About the same as Grace Leong's.

Striking Grace Leong off the nursing registrar is as good as taking away her livelihood. We already lost a life. Do we need to take another?

Is there another way out of this?

p.s. I am not sure if getting struck off is like having your driver's license revoked i.e. you can get it back if you start over. I hope it would be the case. Can someone verify this? Cinthia? Benjamin?

Nurse with 180 patients: System needs fixing too

I WAS shocked to read that a single nurse could be made to look after 180 patients, especially in a First World nation such as Singapore ('Nurse found negligent but coroner praises her'; ST, Jan 18).

It is hard to imagine how any human being - however competent or diligent - could provide the expected standard of care.

To put the issue in perspective, school students are generally healthier than elderly inmates, yet no school would leave just one teacher in charge of the welfare and safety of 180 students.

While the coroner may have found negligence in the administration of a drug which the patient was allergic to, it is harsh that nurse Grace Leong now faces the prospect of being struck off, while the welfare home has presumably escaped sanction and will continue to operate.

It is true that nurses - while human and thus fallible - owe a duty of care to their patients. Yet care is not provided by individuals alone, but by organisations and the systems set up therein.

When accidents occur, it is crucial to look not just at the individuals involved in making the error but also the system and organisation which permitted such errors to happen.
If there was negligence, we should also look at how a system was set up which placed Madam Leong under such inhuman working conditions.

When workers are overloaded and stretched to the point of exhaustion, the shocking thing is not that such errors occurred - it is that such errors did not occur with greater frequency.

The system of management in hospitals is sorely abused. I believed that the culprit is actually inertia and the unwillingness to make things better in a working environment, esp as with this type of skilled labour, there is little occurrence of accidents, this meaning that the workers are trained to be extremely meticulous becos it concerns human lives. Thus banking on this trait in this industry, docs and nurses are worked to the bone with lousy shifts and bad hours. Hospitals should wake up now and understand that these professionals are also human beings with their own lives to live.

5. JayWalk left...

Jaschocolate: The cold hard truth is that everything is driven by bottom line even at the expense of risking people's lives.

Akk: I believe leaving Nurse Grace Leong to solely shoulder the entire blame is wrong. The hospital is just as guilty, if not more.

Sigh, it's always easy to judge and point fingers. I wonder for how long she has been handling this gross amount of patients. I feel 179 patients would be grateful to her all the while she was taking care of them. 180 is really ridiculous. Like, if I open 180 windows with different tasks for the management to do right now, will they be able to? I can't even chat in 10 MSN windows.
And I think AKK has a point. Moreover I think they are like teachers - without the passion for the profession, one simply cannot last long in the industry. And nobody should ever take advantage of that.

180 patients in a typical 8 hour day means the nurse spends about 2.66 min per person per day, assuming equal attention is paid to everyone... However, we all know that some patients will require more care than others, plus the added burden of undoubted admin... so my guess is most of the patients receive perhaps just a few tens of SECONDS of attention from the nurse throughout the course of a day. That is atrocious, even animals in the zoo are treated better! IMHO, this was a tragedy in waiting because of the system, not in spite of it...

I might be a bit biased, 'cos my sis used to be a nurse (ER one somemore), so I know how much they go thro'. Esp during the SARS, one moment, people avoided them like plague, the next they are called heros, can people make up their minds?!?!?!

Sian XMM Episode II

Jap Gal and I were talking about the funny misadventure of PJ  when it reminded me of another sian XMM episode, many years back.

Below is an extract of my conversation with Jap Gal that tells the story. I have taken the liberty of editing the conversation a little bit, for the benefit of the rest, in the attempt to tell a clearer story.

Enjoy the story.

Session Start (Jap Gal): Wed Jan 18 19:51:59 2006

JayWalk: You know this girl in Applied Econs, Ming?
JayWalk: Let me tell you another sian xmm story.
JayWalk:
You got time or not?

Jap Gal:
shoot

JayWalk:
Time = We were in NTU.
JayWalk:
Place = Centerpoint, Times The BookShop.
JayWalk:
We were out jalan jalan when we popped into the bookstore.

Jap Gal:
Dating?

JayWalk:
Not dating. Just friends jalan jalan.
JayWalk:
Anyway, that time got some promotional showcase display going on. It was a Philips CDi thingie (CDi = CD interactive machiam Nintendo or Sony Playstation). So the showcase stand is this TV which has the Philips CDi console below... So I told her, that this CDi thing very fun one and the TV is touch screen interactive one... (when in actual fact, it is not. it is just an ordinary tv set).

Jap Gal:
u bluff pple again.

JayWalk:
Then I told her to go ahead and give it a try i.e. go touch the screen and see what happen.

Jap Gal:
:-))

JayWalk:
She walked ahead while I walked away quickly in the opp direction.

Jap Gal:
c, i told u u more mean

JayWalk:
So she stand in front of the TV, press the screen here, press the screen there, in front of all the PEOPLE in the store.

Jap Gal:
=))

JayWalk:
Then she said quite loudly, "How come nothing one??" More people turned to look.

Jap Gal:
terrible leh u

JayWalk:
She turned around to look for me and I was far far away liao.....
JayWalk:
I was outside the shop looking and waving at her through the glass.

Jap Gal:
aiyo... i bet she din talk to u for days.

JayWalk:
No lah....
JayWalk:
I kena whacked until my arm blue-black. But she still talk to me lah. That day i laughed until pengz.... kena whacked also cannot feel the pain... only later then realised "Eh? How come arm got blue-black?"

My Favourite iPod Accessory

Spotted this gadget on the Technology Section of the South China Morning Post dated 17 Jan 2006.

Apparently, the company producing this gadget is Atech Flash but strangely the website has no mention of it anywhere. Perhaps it wasn't time for the official launch and I guess the rest of us kinda jumped the gun a little bit.

Imagine, in a home where every family member has an iPod. So every time anyone needs to go to the toilet, just bring along their iPod, plug it in and voila! Personal Loo Music.

I guess since there'd probably be a bath tub in there as well, then perhaps also it would be a great thing to have during those relaxing bubble baths.

Definitely not a gadget for the public toilets or nobody would want to come out at all! Then again, the gadget wouldn't be around for long. Somebody would have ripped it off the wall the minute it's installed.

Ok, coming back to this gadget. It doesn't have a name yet since it isn't officially launched.

As such, I have taken the liberty in my attempt to beat the market by naming it before everybody else. Hopefully, some big advertising firms would hire me to be their CD, in view of my creative prowess.

I shall call this gadget. iPangSai.

Jay Secret Recipe

We have seen MeePok sharing his Coca-Cola Chicken recipe and I reciprocated with my Char Kway Png recipe in his comment section.

It is time to share another Jay Secret Recipe

*applause with theme music playing*

Le Nouille de Poulet avec du Potage de Gerber*

Ingredients
200g Chicken Breast
1 Pack of Maggi Instant Noodle (Chicken Flavour)
1 Egg
Mixed vegetables
Spring onions
Sesame Seed Oil
White Pepper
Oregano Leaves
Coriander Leaves
1 Gerber Chicken Noodle <-- Secret Ingredient!

Boil chicken breast then hand shred them. Leave that aside.

Boil a pot of water with the mixed vegetables inside. When water come to a boil, add in the packet of instant noodles into the pot.

Once noodle is fully cooked, add in the instant noodle's seasoning and empty the whole bottle of the Gerber Chicken Noodle together with the chicken shreds.

Simmer for 2 minutes on low.

Crack the egg into the pot and close the lid to let it simmer on low for another 2 minutes.

Garnish with a pinch of chopped spring onions and some leaves of the coriander. Splash a dash of sesame seed oil as well as a sprinkle of  white pepper.

Bon Appetite!

*(Translate: The Chicken Noodle with Soup of Gerber)

Ok ok... for those who still haven't realised. Gerber Chicken Noodle is baby food. Yes the mushy mushy horrible colour gooey thing that they put in glass jars.

It all happen one fine day during NS, many years ago. A time when my brain was put on hiatus for a period of exactly 2-1/2 years. There I was in the baby food section of the Coronation Plaza NTUC supermarket on my weekend off when this particular bottle of Chicken Noodle caught my eye.

With my brain twiddling it's imaginary thumbs for the longest time, I was thinking...

"Hmm.... I can't seemed to remember what this baby food tastes like. I vaguely remember eating it but I have absolutely no recollection what it tastes like."

With that, a bottle of it popped into my basket.

That evening, I opened the bottle and put a scoop of the goo into my mouth and....

"Eh? How come no taste one??!!"

Then it occurred to me that since baby's stomach still not able to handle food properly yet, there would no sugar nor sodium nor MSG. Hence, the taste would be bland.

In a way, it wasn't really edible but it seemed like such a waste to throw it away and so I chucked it into the fridge among many other things that I chucked in there over the years (yuck!).

It just so happened that evening that I got hungry in the middle of the night and decided to cook a packet of instant noodles for supper. So I opened the drawer and grabbed a packet at random. It was Maggi Chicken Flavour Noodle. Again, thumb-twiddling brain started to play a game of word association...

"Maggi Noodle Chicken Flavour = Chicken Noodle = Gerber Chicken Noodle?..."

So I thot since both also chicken noodle, that means can mix lor. And that's exactly what I did. Surprise, surprise, the soup became exceptionally yummy. What originally was bland baby food, turned out in its full glory when added into the instant noodles soup base.

My contribution... buy a can of campbell soup, no need those cream based pasta sauce. buy pasta.
Boil water, add salt and oil, dump pasta inside, fish out pasta when cooked.
boil soup, add whatever ingredients u wan inside. Cooked liao then dump over pasta.
Wah la! Cream based pasta. wahahahahah!!
* additional: Pour over pasta, sprinkle cheese over the whole thing. Dump into oven and bake for a few minutes or till cheese all melted. Wah la! Baked Pasta!

Uncle Jay: Expired liao, of cos bland became tasty lah.
Reminds me of that time when my friend was eating cup noodles in front of me. She kept telling me how yummy hers was. Unconvinced, I took a sip of the soup. My next response was to immediately check the expiry date on the wrapper.
First time I knew expired food actually can taste better to some people. You another "special" one.

akk: I thought your bread machine spoil liao?
