Maximise Your Potential Award Ceremony (16th Sept 2006)

Well, folks the RunForFunds Project marked a successful milestone with the Maximise Your Potential Award Ceremony where the intended money we raised from last year's marathon has safely reached that hands of the kids. No golden taps, no gold peanuts. The full proverbial dollar. Not a single penny less.
For more information, goto http://runforfunds.blogdrive.com . In the mean time, I will mirror that latest entry on the awards to share with everybody.
For those who have helped along the way or would like to help, how about mirroring this post so that more people can be aware of this project. Bear in mind this is not an appeal for funds. We don't accept money from people we don't know. What we do need is well wishers to continue to motivate us to keep this project going as well as in the hope that more people would be inspired to join in the effort and/or start new projects on their own.
With the cumulative effect of all the little efforts around the country, this island would be a better place for you and me.

(MYP award recipients, their parents, Run For Funds Superfriends & Sponsors)

Hi folks,
The Maximise Your Potential (MYP) Award Ceremony was held @ Geylang Methodist Primary School (GMPS) on 16th Sept 2006.

(GMPS Principal Miss Mabel Wee addressing the students and their parents)

This is the 3rd MYP ceremony, since its inauguration @ GMPS in 2004. This year we have 14 MYP award recipients (3 new students). Each received $200 cash, $50 Popular Book Store Voucher and $100 training fund.

(Sharing a lighter moment @ MYP award ceremony)

We also celebrate our first batch of graduates from the MYP programme. Terence Teo and Alfie Lim (MYP 2004 & 2005) have done well in their 2005 PSLE and qualified for the secondary school of their choice. Terence (PSLE score 223) is now at Geylang Methodist Secondary and Alfie (PSLE score 243) at Chung Cheng Secondary School.

Thanks for your support for the Run For Funds movement. Below are pics of the kids you are sponsoring.

But first, here's a thank you message from the kids (they made this card)......

Thank you Brudder for posting this blog. Hope more pple will start something to help those who are disadvantaged. While our Gahmen's social security safety net is quite wide, there are still a lot of gaps. We can, in our own small ways, plug these gaps. No need to be superman and save the world. Every little effort makes a difference.

Rude Vegetables

Got this photo from Deek who saw these when out supermarketing. While this blog is not about "ooo... how sexy Deek is out there grocery shopping!", interested parties are still welcomed to apply via this blog.

Win a hot date with Chick Magnet Deek!

On a less serious(!) note, Deek chanced into some vegetables with interesting names. I wonder how much Kow Bu cost? How would it taste if you eat Kow Pek and Kow Bu together?

Then there is the Kana vegetable next to it. If not wash properly, would it be Kana Sai?
If you ask me, they all look like siew pak choy to me. But, what do I know? I will never be half the chick magnet that Deek is.

Send in your applications today!

Can see the stems of the Kow Pek and Kana ish different. One is white and one green. =P
Kow Bu should be $1.20 also la since Kow Pek is $1.20. So add up ish $2.40 loh!! But sollie la, Kow Bu ish sold out le... hahahha!

Sometimes, people will mix up the vege cos when they chose, they put the vege tt they do not want to one side. Then sometimes, when one type of vege is sold out, the other vege next to it will "spill over" to the sold out vege side mah. So maybe it is the same loh.

Anyway, I also dun know what are the diff la. Can eat can liao!! haaa!

Picture Week Part 5 - Summer's End

Summer's coming to an end soon and Mid Autumn's Festival marks the day when the climate over here starts to cool. For here, the Dumplings Festival marks the beginning of summer where temperature will start to climb until Mid Autumn Festival where the mercury falls back steadily to make way for winter.
Anyway, before it's too late, I just wanted to post a couple of photos that I took earlier during the summer season.

It's the caterpillar of a giant moth. While some may find it ugly, I thought it was rather beautiful especially how the shade of green complements the white of the strips.
As humble as that of a caterpillar, I am still in awe of God's beautiful creation.
There is beauty even in the ugliest of things. We just need to remove our blinkers in order to see it.

Picture Week Part 4 - Irony

That's a freight container you are looking at and the driver sleeping in a hammock under it. It's the summer and with a little breeze, it can get very sleepy even in 30+ degrees heat.

Loading a container usually takes quite a while and so while waiting for my guys to finish loading the container, the driver decides to catch 40 winks. A good plan if I may add. Otherwise, I risk having my goods strewn all over the highway as a result of the driver dozing off.

Hmm... better to let him sleep.

Here's the thing. So there I was, looking at a guy who drives a container truck for a living and earns a fraction of what I am earning.

Yet, ironically, I am the one looking out the window, from my air-conditioned office, at him in envy.

Sigh.....

Picture Week Part 3 - Weird Delicacies

Strangely coincidental that MeePok was blogging about eating stewed rabbit heads while I have 2 dishes to introduce today. The common denominator between our culinary adventures was that we both didn't order it but had to eat it to avoid offending our respective hosts.
Welcome to Spitland, folks.

I went for dinner at a Japanese restaurant last Sunday and this was ordered. It was smoked whale specially flown in from Japan. While it tasted very good, I was somewhat feeling guilty as I had this feeling that the whale before me was killed despite being on the endangered list. Over the years, Japan has been tactically maneuvering in world politics to justify commercial whaling in the guise of marine research. This obviously didn't go down too well with the WWF, Green Peace and other environmental activists groups.

I tried asking what species of whales, in the hope that it could be one that was not on the endangered specie. Not of the waitresses knew and the chef speaks Japanese and hence no answer from him either. My guess is that it was either a Humpback Whale or a Minke Whale.

I felt guilty because while I know I owe a responsibility to the world to be a Green citizen, the smoked whale tasted really good. I am most ashamed.

Next dish was Horse Sashimi. Granted that I have already tried Donkey (and its pen1s), horse didn't really intimidate me except that it was sashimi i.e. raw i.e. uncooked. Imagine if I were to run after the horse in the field and sank my teeth in the animal. It would have tasted the same, only more bloody.

I will never look at My Little Pony the same way ever again

Name Series Part 7 - Christopher II

Toby is actually Topper in my earlier Lorbert Series.

If you have been following my Lorbert Series, you would have been aware that Toby was supposedly meant to be one of the episodes but was pulled down at the last minute. Back then, I just felt that it was not appropriate to write about it at that time.

Well, the time to bare it all has finally arrived and perhaps now is the right time to pick up where I left off earlier and finally tell the story of the Sweet Barracuda.

Sweet Barracuda's real name is Sandra and Toby got to know her through GF 2.0, whom the 2 ladies were very good friends. So Toby liked Sandra but problem is, Sandra like another guy (let's call him G). To make matters even more complicated, G is after another girl (A). People have love triangles but Toby had to choose to start his first ever love affair with a quadrilateral. Yes, Toby was a late bloomer as far as BGR is concerned.

It was tough for Toby for he was totally inexperienced and to add salt to wound, a very very very nice guy. As you would agree, girls like bad boys and nice guys end up trampled like a doormat. Yes, Toby was a virgin doormat.

Toby was shy and given that Sandra was pursuing other interest, he could only pined for her from afar. His strategy was to be that steadfastly strong nice guy and just wait. Hopefully, his enduring patience would make her see his feelings for her one day.

Funnily, it was the same for Sandra who was pining from afar as G finally got together with A. Now G was one kind of a player and was ironically attracting the girls like moths to an open flame. By the time, G got tired of A and dumped her, Sandra came right in after.

If you were a cat and there was a fish jumping into in your mouth on its own, what would you do? Eat it, of course. Well, Sandra was that proverbial fish and G, unfortunately was that proverbial cat.

So it was blissful for the new couple and certainly heart-wrenching for Toby. Yet, the goodness of Toby's heart felt that as long as Sandra was happy, he should be happy for her as well.

Now true to G's style of operation, the flavour of the month didn't last very long and Sandra soon found herself dumped. She became depressed and Toby being the true gentleman (to a fault) refused to take advantage of the situation. Instead, he provided the shoulder to cry on without asking for anything in return. Sandra's depression became more serious that we had imagined as she was admitted to hospital one day for severe anorexia and had to undergo psychiatric counseling. Her studies were badly affected and she had to repeat her freshman year as a result of missing her final examinations.

Toby's heart ached silently at the sight of Sandra's fading health but nonetheless continued to be that strength of pillar staying by her side as a "friend".

Sandra eventually got better and just when Toby felt that it was time to finally make the move. Tragedy struck. Sandra and G got back together. G, at that time, just ended a relationship with another girl (B) and Sandra decided that she would reenact the Cat and the Fish scenario. (WTF??)

Toby this time really geh tio to see Sandra slipped away from his arms so easily. After all that he had given, it still came to nought.

It was really tough on Toby for all the dating experience that I accumulated over the years, Toby caught up to speed in just 6 months. Anyway, Toby figured out the emotional mess that he got himself into and decided to finally throw in the towel. While the quest had been abandoned, Toby nevertheless still carry a small torch of hope, hidden in the deep corner of his heart.

We fast forward to 1995 when the semester was over and I was serving my internship at Shittybank. It was the final day of my internship and we all decided to party at Barracuda (Marina South) to celebrate after work. Towards the end of the evening, we found Sandra slumped over the patio table on the upper alfresco deck. It was a pitiful sight as Sandra was half passed out drunk, puking her guts out and sobbing her eye sockets away at the same time.

G dumped her a second time.

I can imagine the heart ache that Toby had felt that night as he pulled me aside and said,

Toby: Jay, can you help me send her home?

Looking at Toby's eyes, I already knew what he was going to ask even before he opened his mouth. I'd never say no to a brother. We cut the party short and carried her to my car with the plastic bags and the paper napkins.

I put the two of them in the back seat with Sandra's head on his lap snoozing and sobbing intermittently. As I got into the driver's seat, I look at Toby through the rear view mirror. The excruciating heartache could be seen from his pair of bespectacled eyes.

He heart pained her.
I heart pained him.

It was a uneventful drive before we reached her block in Ang Mo Kio. He sent her up before getting back into the car.

The journey back to Toby's place was a quiet one. Neither of us spoke. It was as if our conversation had already call it a night before us.

We learned that Sandra was ok the next morning and Toby got a call from her to thank him. He spent the next few minutes offering some words of comfort and that was the last time we heard from her.

We did run into Sandra in school from time to time after that incident but things were permanently changed after that night.

Dear Toby,

I am not sure if you would ever get the chance to read this. It would really be awkward for I am writing about somebody who would be reading about it. While I am not sure if everything is absolutely accurate but this is merely my recollection to the best of my memory.

I apologise if airing your laundry will upset you. But still this is part of my memory and my life. I need to archive this. As a show of respect, this is under password protection, which I don't even know if I would ever give you the password.

You are a good person and Adelyn is lucky to have you. Frankly, I think it's Sandra's loss not to realise what a wonder and decent person you are. Pity.

He's nice but he was trampled. I don't understand why he took so long to decide to make a move on her if he liked her so much. :( Hopefully the girl learned her lesson too. G is such a jerk!!!

Name Series Part 6 - Wilma II

Wilma II

It was at the time between ex-gf2 and Kheng. The calendar was showing July 1993 and I was in my "second" freshman year. July has always been my favourite month of the Uni academic calendar. One word to explain why.

Orientation.
Orientation was a period of great fun for me. Lessons won't really start formally until the 4th week and it was fun, fun and fun all the way. There were new freshman chicks to tackle. Orientation camps and Jam n Hops to go to, etc.

I was heading my faculty's Social committee and it was a particular hectic period for me as I was putting up a Faculty Pagaent and a Faculty Jam-n-Hop at the same time.

So there was this one night when the NUS Arts Jam-n-Hop was going on and all my roommates went sans moi. I had to stay back as I have my own Jam-n-Hop to set up. We were staging it later that week and hence had no time to go party with the rest of the gang. It was there when Wilma got to know my roommates and I guessed they had such a good time that they decided to take her on a Night NTU tour after the event.

I was exhausted from all the event preparation that I passed out on my bed without realising that they had returned and chilling out in my room. I briefly remembered waking up to the introductions (Hi. This is Wilma.) before falling back asleep. I was really tired.

The next day when I woke up, I did remember a girl the previous night but have no idea what her name was. Heck, I didn't even remember what she looked like. I didn't have class that morning (Thursday on a 3-day week timetable) and I was chilling out in my room with the music playing softly while I catch up on my assignments. My roommates were all Engineers and so I had the whole room to myself that morning while they were out attending classes.

There was a knock on the door and there she was. Although I have no recollection of her face nor her name, I knew by gut feeling that she was the same girl from the night before. She came by to ask me out for lunch.

Here's the interesting part. She was from NUS and she traveled all the way to NTU just to ask me out for lunch. Wow. I like her already! As it turned out, we hit if off right away. She was smart, funny and witty. Just hanging out with her was a joy and I believed that there were definitely sparks flying all over place. I asked her to be my Plus-One for the coming Jam-n-Hop and she readily agreed.

Fast forward.

It was Sunday night and I had the entire Zanzibar (Le Meridien Hotel) booked for the party. I must have packed 500 people in an establishment that was legally allowed to admit only 300 for fire safety reasons. Oh well. Can't keep people out of a good party, can we?

The program ran smoothly as we had a blast of a time. Especially so when the head-bartender sneaked me 50 bourbon cokes. Technically, it wasn't sneaking as the barman sure wasn't subtle about it as he lined all 50 of them from one end of the bar to the other. Great party, I tell ya.

Being the head-honcho of the organising committee automatically made me the host of the party and people were coming around making small talks and congratulating me on a very successful party.

As wonderful a time as I was having, there were some isolated incidents that marred what could have been the perfect party.

Among the people and the small talks, I had a few occasions of being pulled to one side for a "private talk".

Below is a sample of the gist of these "private conversation".

Friend #1: That's you new gf? Wah raoz. Can be better looking or not?
Friend #2: Eh, Jay. You are the most happening guy in school. Surely you can do better than this?
Friend #3: Eh. Leave her here lah. I got a friend, Yvonne (insert any other girl's name) over there wanting to know you. Come lah! Come lah!
Friend #4: Aiyoh, her complexion so terok. I be your gf lah.

Ok ok... I could go on and on but you get the idea.

I was offended but kept my cool for their intentions were good albeit very misguided.
Sure, Wilma was no beauty queen nor model material but she was a very fun person to be with. I liked her and I think that is all that mattered right?

Anyway, we broke up after a month. I haven't gotten over my break up with ex-gf2 then and I didn't want to be with her under rebound circumstances. In short, I wasn't ready for another relationship so soon.

She left and I've not heard from her since.

Piki: Kudos for the womenfolk to make the first move and help share the burder of crash and burn. Granted that he was dumped a year later, trust me. He enjoyed that one year together.

Anna: Rejection is just part and parcel of the game. It stings a little at first but it is easy to get over it. So I won't be too concerned if I were you.

Your friends... jialat. Say until like that. Actually, when you wrote "She was smart, funny and witty" , I was wondering where the 'pretty" part is. This is sad. Why are not-so-good-looking girls always sidelined? The better friends that I have are not the prettiest of the lot, but their personalities more than make up for everything else.

But I'm not worried la, I'm pretty one. haha. I just feel bad for that Wilma that guys said those kinds of stuff before knowing her better. Then again, after knowing her, maybe they wouldn't say such things.

xcake: Truth to be told. She was pretty to me coz a woman's beauty isn't all about the external appearance. A smile and a heart of gold goes a long way too.
