I was supposed to drive up to Napa Valley to visit the vineyards but I overslept as a result of jet lagged.

Being a two-and-a-half hour drive up, my waking at 11am certainly throw my entire schedule down the toilet.

After having lunch at a Japanese Ramen shop, it was decided we go for a drive and go down to "Santa Narrow" jalan jalan.

Knowing me, everything is need GPS to guide one, I struggled with the bladdy navigation to get the address.
In the end, we gave up and had my cousin to guide me from the passenger seat.

It was a short drive of about 6 miles before I saw the signage in front of me.

Santana Row.

At 15 degress Celsius and a light nippy breeze, the weather couldn't be better for a cup of coffee in the courtyard under the afternoon sun. The whole place is damn pretty. Beautiful buildings, beautiful cars and beautiful chiobus. *drool*

Anyway, I have a soft spot for immaculate lawns and with the kids lying and playing on the grass, it was just to hard to resist not taking a picture.

BMW 530i

This is my ride in San Francisco / San Jose during my layover before heading down to Las Vegas. I must say the new BMW 3 and 5-series are quite chio although I can't say the same for the clunky looking 7-series.

Good thing I came to San Francisco at a time when my aunt just changed new car. Once I got in, she threw me the car key for she really hates to drive unless she has to.

The ride comfort for the driver is really good with the sporty bucket seats hugging you tightly as you adjust it to fit you body shape. As usual, the drive was very smooth and perhaps it had a bigger engine capacity than the 320i I had when I was in Singapore, the transmission and manueverability was much better.

The funny thing with all these modern fancy smancy high tech stuff was that I didn't know how to start the engine as this was one of those keyless car thingie. I press the "Start" button but nothing happen leh.... My aunt damn evil. Just sit there laughing as I kar lang kar bok inside the car. Purposely don't want to tell me how to start saying that since I "so good with gadget stuff", I should be able to figure it out.

Eventually, I gave up and the answer (only after my aunt realised that the wasted minutes inside the carpark is causing her parking fee to skyrocket) to the puzzle was that I needed to step on the brake when I press the "Start" button.

Orrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Han cher......

Then hor, when we reached home and got out of the car hor, eh.... HOW TO LOCK THE CAR ONE???!!
Again, after having my ego trampled to bits, I learned that I just needed to touch the door handle of the car to lock/unlock it.

Orrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Han cher......

My only saving grace was that I was able to easily navigate through the on-board iDrive system which I personally was not impressed at all. The navigation was not intuitive which makes the user-friendly level down several notches. If I remember correctly, it runs on Windows CE platform. Yuck.

Overall, I think Mercedes Benz is a much better car (within that category). The Mercedes Benz used to be a very "Uncle Car" but with new  and recent designs (especially the S-Class), the Mercedes Benz-es are now pretty stylish, thus challenging the Beemer as the car for the young and trendy.

I test drove this same BMW on a "yet to open" highway last year. The drive was SWEET!!!....even though I had the same "difficulty" trying to start the car.....heh heh.

Flight To San Francisco

4pm and I am still sitting in the airport. Plane spoil.

We have had a bad year last year as far as business was concerned and this year calls for a bit of belt tightening on everybody's part.

My usual travel arrangement would have been to buy a B-class economy fare and then using my mileage to upgrade to business class. This time round, I decided to save a bit of money and opt for an award return ticket as I have accumulated close to 200,000 FF Miles liao (Not because they gave me a lot but rather, hardly able to use coz they keep saying no award upgrade seats available and all sorts of excuses $#$@*&!!!).

60,000 for an economy return ticket (Non mileage accrual). Cheap coz free mah....

So there I was sitting in the bladdy plane waiting for take off when the Captain announced over the PA that starter engine rosak. Now waiting for spare part to deliver and will be delayed an hour.

Better rosak on the ground then in mid-air, I told myself.

1 hour ended up to be 3.5 hours where the engineers gave up and declared the plane not air-worthy as we were all herded out of the plane. NW staff were quite good as I was quickly transfered to a flight on Cathay Pacific and because between airline-to-airline, I knew this was going to be a full fare economy flight and quickly flashed my Marco Polo Club card. 6,900 free FF miles. Small consolation lah.

Still, economy class in the best airline is still nowhere near the business class of the worst airline. It was most unfortunate.

All my prefered seat selection were gone as a result of this transfer. I may be a Platinum member in NW, I am just a mere peon Marco Polo Green and so I got stuck right at the back in Row 57. I became part time flight toilet attendant.

20 cents, please. You want tissue?

The CX flight eventually took off at 4.30 pm. 8 hours later. Luckily, this was a direct non-stop flight as compared to a connection in Narita if I were to fly via NW. And so while I may be stuck in the HK airport for 8 hours, I arrived a mere 3.5 hours later.

A lot of things happened at the back of the plane. Got this indian kid crying for 6 of the 10 hours we were airborne. Could have strangled the kid but refrained coz I just couldn't accept the money that everybody (including his parents) were offering me to do it. iSaint.

Another eurasian kid sitting in the aisle across from me, suddenly did the merlion onto the aisle between us. OK... time to wear my shoes the rest of the journey liao. I must say the CX attendants were very professional about it. Granted, I can sense they were a bit peeved with the extra (also not to mention stinky) work, they nonetheless still maintain a friendly attitude as they got down on their knees and cleaned up the mess. Salute.

The journey was bumpy due to turbulence but not to the extend of having your testicles pasted to the ceiling. Instead, it was a cradle type of rocking that lulled you to sleep very quickly. With my noise cancelation earphones switched on although not plugged in to anything, I was soon snoozing in the most awkward of posture. iNeckAche.

Breakfast was a disaster not that the food was bad but the idiotic char bor sitting in front of me suddenly decided to return her seat, mid-meal, to upright position. The spring in the seating must have been brand new as the seat sprang back to upright position in 0.000001 second, thus catapulting my orange juice into the air, 2 somersaults and a half twist before landing onto my lap.

7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5 flashed the panel of judges that would have made Fu MingXia or Guo JingJing proud.

Heng, I had my blanket draped over my lap as it valiantly made the ultimate sacrifice for me. Other than a orange smelling sleeve, I got away pretty much unscathed. Just when you thought I would pledge my eternal loyalty to the blanket from hereon, I switched it with the char bor's when the latter headed to the toilet.

Yes, iBastard.

sounds eventful!! glad you landed safely though!! SQ charged me 70000 miles for my flight back to sg - no, they gave a 15% discount coz it was booked online and surprisingly very very easy (compared to previous attempts to redeem flights!!). Wish you were going home this time...sigh!! :(

The Duck Who Wouldn't Fly South

I'm sitting in the Hong Kong airport right now as I kick off my travelling for the year after a nice break for 2 months.

Like birds who fly south for the winter, I am flying up north. Only difference is that while the birds do it only once a year, I have to do it 4 times a year (6 times last year).

That kinda makes me One Stupid Bird.

At this point, I can imagine interject at this junction to scream "But you are Bird Man what?!!

NB...... *bish*

Anyway, thought I drop off a story before I get myself herded into cattle class for the next 5 + 9 hours. Ouch.
I am well prepared with 20 GB of *cough* cheong movies *cough cough* on my iPod.

Just hope my ang moh knees don't give me problems.

Once upon a time there was a duck who just didn't understand the concept of flying south for the winter. In fact. he thinks it's rather daft to have fly up and down repeatedly.

So one fine winter, he thought he'd stay put. He thought what was the worst that could happen?

As the winter wore on, the mercury dropped at an alarming pace. It got so cold one day that duckie regretted his stubborn decision and grudgingly set off for the south as well.

Alas, it was too cold to fly as duckie found himself in mid-air with his wings frozen stiff. What followed immediately was a plunging free fall. Duckie thought he was going to die for sure and he started praying to God.

Lo and behold, he landed on a hay barn crashing through the roof.

OK, so he didn't die of a tragic and messy death but the frost bite was so severe that the hypothermia was still going to kill him anyway.

Duckie prayed to God again and the sound of the cow bell approached from a distance.

"Hor seh liao! Help lai liao!"

It was a cow who eventually showed up.

*SPLAT!*

The cow shitted on the duck.

"$%'#@#@$$*&!!!!!" cursed the duck. "God, I already going to die so tragically liao, You still send a cow to pang sai on my head. WTF???!!"

But little did duckie know that the warmth from the dung was slowly thawing his wings and before you know it, duckie was flapping happily again.

It was joy! Hooray! Duckie prayed again, feeling apologetic for his outburst against God.

In jubilation, duckie was happy quacking none stop, making helluva noise. The ruckus eventually attracted the attention of a fox who started making its way towards the source of the incessant noise.

Duckie heard the ruffles of the hay coming towards his direction. Thinking someone was coming to his rescue, he quaked even more.

Soon, the fox came face to face with the duck and gobbled duckie up.


Moral Of The Story
1) A person who shits on your head doesn't mean he is your enemy.

2) A person who comes to your rescue doesn't mean he is your friend.

3) When you are desperate and hungry, don't not look down on other people even if they are covered in shit. They may just be the key to your survival.

4) When you are warm and comfy in a pile of shit, SHUT THE F*CK UP!

I followed her to the room and I was given the silent "shhh..." signal, with her index finger to her lips, as I entered.

There Gabriel was, tucked snugly in the corner of his relatively big crib, snoozing away.

Left of Right? - Faith

It wasn't so obvious for Faith as she took quite a while to establish a master hand. Even up to now, we are only 95% sure, simply based on the fact that she uses the right hand to hold the pen.

So why only 95% sure? Well, I see the way she hold the pen to write and draw is quite wobbly and so perhaps she has unwittingly been using the non-master hand? Hence, I reserve the 5% to anticipate that one day should she decide to switch to the left.

Okie let me put the record straight. Children at 4 years of age are not supposed to be holding pencils to write.

Fat paint brushes are the correct "instruments" at Faith's age. Just look at the way Faith gripped the paintbrush, she is holding it beautifully as in like holding a pencil (some children of 4 years cannot). It is interesting to note that she is painting the entire paper blue (would had been good if i could ask her to interpret that... sea? sky? or draw something with that paintbrush). I studied Language and Art so therefore I know such stuff.

I was munching on keropok when I decided to offer Gabriel a piece. The greedy little fella trotted happily over and I thought this would be a good chance to see which hand will come up to receive the little piece of cracker, and thereby establishing himself as a right hander or a lefty.

Turns out that he is a clear cut righty.

Several Cars Reported Missing During Inaugural Singapore F1 Race.

The much anticipated inaugural Singapore Formula-1 race kicked off with much fanfare and was a resounding success with Jenson Button taking the first ever Singapore chequered flag.

However, there were a few mishaps that marred the event, without which, could have been touted as the perfect event of the year. Several cars did not return to the paddock after the race was over and the police have since launched a island-wide for these cars. The missings cars belong to Takuma Sato, Jarno Trulli as well as the Brazilian pair of Felipe Massa and Reubens Barrichello.

All four cars and their respective drivers were subsequently found six hours later. Below are their individual reports.

1) Felipe Massa was found circling in the Toa Payoh estate disoriented and dehydrated.
"I took a wrong exit into this place by I just couldn't find a way out of the estate. I kept going in circles and loops. It was hell when all the street names looked the same!", said Felipe Massa.

"I do not know what is Lorong 2 or Lorong 4 or even what is a Lorong? It also did not appear that Street 31 will lead to Street 32." He added. "I even tried to follow the block numbers hoping that there is an exit at Block 1!"

2) Reubens Barrichello was found sitting by the pavement next to his car at Marine Parade. The police also observed that the car was dangling over a road hump at Marine Vista. It looked apparently that the low clearance of the race car's chassis could not clear the road humps.
"My god! The humps are too high in this part of Singapore!" exclaimed a visibly distressed Barrichello.

3) Not all were upset as Jarno Trulli did make light of the bad situation as he was found signing autographs for the local fans and enjoying a hearty breakfast of the local coffee and kaya bread, when the police finally caught up.

"My map says Siglap Road but it says Killiney Road* here." said Trulli. "I knew I was a goner and decided to give up."

* Trulli was refering to the Killiney Road Kaya Toast branch outlet on Siglap Road.

4) It seems that Takuma Sato had it worst of the four missing drivers as he was detained at the Malaysian immigration checkpoint in Johor without a passport and a valid visa.

"Ah nor.. Singapore is too small i-ne! I miss one exit and I am in Malaysia!" said the Japanese driver.

At press time, the Japanese High Commission is still in discussion with their Malaysian counterpart regarding the release of Sato.

Sea Monkey

I remember using Lynx as the first browser of my foray into the World Wide Web. Back then it was purely text-based and as such there were no images to speak off. The webpages were strictly text. Then came NCSA Mosaic as my first graphic-based browser which opened a whole new world of the internet to me.

Next came Netscape Navigator and that was even before Microsoft Internet Explorer came aboard. Problem was that as Internet Explorer finally showed up and subsequently moved to version 6.0, Netscape didn't do enough to keep up with the competition and was rapidly losing market share to the "dark side".

Apparently, the next generation of Netscape took a bit longer than expected to launch. Netscape did eventually upgraded itself from version 4.x to 6.0 but the latter update bombed (in my opinion). Netscape version was very short-lived and version soon came out quietly to hope to rectify the damage that version 6 had done but alas it was too late. It still bombed and it further convict people to continue to use the Microsoft browser.

Sure, there was Opera along the side to offer as an alternative option, but I could never learn to get to like its interface.

Problem with Internet Explorer 6.0 back then was that it was very sluggish when it comes to loading webpages, we were all waiting for the chance to ditch it as soon as a better alternative came along.

Unfortunately, it was a long wait and I recall many months of suffering from having no choice but to put up with Internet Explorer.

Finally came Firefox and we all thought that the world was saved. Loading and rendering was way faster and had lotsa bells and whistles along the way. However, there was this one problem that rides up my ass like a undersized thong. It was sucking up too much CPU juice and bogging down the entire system, causing it to operate at a frustratingly snail's pace. Well, partially it was also the user's fault as Firefox allows the user to open multiple tabs within the browser.

Problem is that by the time I have 6 or 7 concurent webpages loading in their respective tabs, the CPU load could be as high as 95%.

Internet Explorer 7.0 came out recently and to where credit is due, page loading was much faster than its predecessor. However, being the nitpicking need-for-more speed junkie, it wasn't good enough for me.

That's when I discovered Sea Monkey. It is the next generation to succeed Firefox. At the moment, it is still in the Beta stage but so far I have not encountered any problems with it. As you can see from the above screen capture (click image to enlarge), I opened 14 tabs and the CPU load is a mere 30% with the occasional spike to 45% but nothing more. The extraordinarily high RAM usage is justifiable from the fact that I have 14 webpages loading at one go. However, with 1 GB of RAM available at my disposable, this amount of RAM consumption is affordable.

Granted at this stage, bells and whistles like add-ons are still in the pipeline, developers are slowly writing updates to support Sea Monkey. It will be an easy transition for developers as both Firefox and Sea Monkey runs on the same Gecko engine.

Anyway, I highly recommend Sea Monkey to anyone seeking a better browser as long as they are adventurous enough to venture in to beta version of software.

Mosaic look better on X terminal than in windows.

It did hang a couple of times (my fault for overloading it lah...) but nothing Ctrl-Alt-Del > End Task cannot rectify.

JayWalking In Atlanta

As many are aware, my blogo-moniker, JayWalk, is derived from a play of words. My name is Jay and this blog is about my Walk on this planet. Hence Jay + Walk = JayWalk. Geddit? Geddit?

Hence, it came as no surprise that whenever jaywalking shows up in the news, I would be drawn to it like a moth to an open flame.

Can't resist.... must read......

Anyway, spotted this amusing article in the bbc.co.uk (don't ask me how I managed to access the website from Spitland) dated 13 Jan 2006.

Apparently some poor Brit got pounced on, wrestled to the ground and cuffed by FIVE friggin' armed police officers, all for the grand crime of crossing the street illegally i.e. jaywalking. Talk about overkill! Poor guy was locked up in jail for 8 hours before he was released. He also had his box of mints confiscated! Oh the horror!!

For a bladdy country who is always harping on other countries' human rights abuse, blah... blah... blah.... They are not putting themselves in a very positive light either. No?

It was a hot afternoon and a man was taking a shower in his home. Halfway through and there was a knock on the door. The man grabbed his green towel and scrambled across the house to answer the door.

The man was dripping wet when he opened the door and his trouble did not go unrewarded for there standing in the door was a very beautiful lady. She was absolutely HOT!

Freezing In JiangXi

As I have mentioned my JiangXi trip recently, the mercury dropped drastically as I headed 500km North. I had my long-sleeve polo, vest and a jacket to keep warm. Good thing I remember bringing my Nike thermal gloves as my finger joints have this tendency to ache very badly under extreme coldness.

It was a nice 15 degree Celsius when I set off and by the time I reached my destination it was down to just 3 degrees. Luckily, I was indoors and pumped full of alcohol when I retired to bed. It probably would have drop to Zero (or even lower) as the night wore on.

Tua King Kong Phone

Looks like the ancient Motorola Tua-Ling-Kong "Water Bottle" phone is making a comeback as I spotted a business associate of mine swaggering proudly with one of these phones in hand. From what I heard, this fad is fast catching on in Ta1wan as well.

Now before anyone scoffs at the brick-look-alike, let me say in its defence that it is a full fletched GSM phone with the works like full colour touch screen, PDA functions, handwriting recognition (got stylus one!) and even a 2.0 million megapixels digital camera built-in!

To quote a cliche, you can take the handphone out of Ch1na, but you can't take the Ch1na out of the handphone. I am referring to the brand name of the phone when I burst out laughing the first time I caught sight of it.

Wah lan! How apt! Tua King Kong handphone!!

Ok ok... before you all see this phone no up ah. Let me throw in one more feature. Because the bladdy form factor is so bladdy big, they can afford to put in a bigger battery. As such, this phone can go 2 weeks on a single charge.

Now those of you who are sharp enough, would have noticed that among the "water bottle" category, this is certainly not the biggest one. Alas, good eye, my friend for they also have the grandfather of all "water bottle" handphone model which is even bigger that this one. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it but reading the mAh rating of the battery in the other phone, I would calculate the other phone to be able to go 1 whole month without recharging.

Whoa Nelly!

p.s. Sure Apple introduced their iPhone but it is really no fight when compared to this TKK-Fone. The latter not only able to beat the iPhone but also as Barffie suggested, beat the crab claws (kar jeem). LOL!

Lost In Translation V - Soll Down

Meepok spotted this sign during his last visit back in September 2006 but we never had a chance to take a picture of it as it was a mere fleeting moment before the sign passed us.

I have since passed by this sign several times but never once did I put in any effort to whip out the camera ahead in anticipation. Too often than not, by the time, I spotted the sign and remembered that I was supposed to take a picture of it, the sign once again eluded me before I could even hit the ON button on the camera.

Well, not this time. I was in the front seat with my camera switched on, ready and waiting. My driver was very much amused.

Spinnee: Let's face it. Other than the foreigners, nobody reads the English parts of the signs and as such, no one from the authorities would have noticed anything amiss.

Aloe: I didn't say anything to the driver coz I didn't want him to know that I am taking pictures for my blog. Wait, sekali, he reads my blog then how?

Akk: The main reason why I bought the Lumix digital camera is because it has the fastest shutter speed in the market in the ultracompact category that allows you to quick snap without blurring.
Casio's Exilim is the only other camera that has shutter speed (for sports mode) as as the Panasonic Lumix. I pick the latter due to the more superior Leica lens.

Bad Start To The New Year

When December rained like it never had for more than 100 years, I knew we were in for a sucky start to the new year.

As a result of our own doing, we have bombs going off in Bangkok and killing people. Madrid has to call off their new year celebrations due to bomb threats. Do we hate each other so much that we have to kill each other? Yes, Saddam Hussein finally hit the gallows but somehow, Iraq is still just as sucky today as it was yesterday. I wonder why?

Then as a result of the rain, we have massive floods and landslides, causing deaths and homelessness in Malaysia and Indonesia. Without even a shred of evidence to back me up, I would still speculate that the extreme weather that we have been facing is a by-product of global warming. That being the case, then again, the disaster is a result of our own doing.

Next, we have the sinking of the Indonesian ferry as well as the crashing of the Indonesian airline. Granted bad weather has been factored into the cause (our own doing again?) but more so of a lack of good management leading to a compromise in safety standards. The sinking ferry carried about 600 people of which only 200 have been found while 400 still remained lost at sea after Day 3. I won't be surprised if the ferry was overloaded to begin with and inadequate safety checks probably also contributed to this disaster just waiting to happen.

Aircraft accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation stretching over 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles). Public and private Indonesian airlines have been repeatedly criticised over their poor safety records, repeated delays and bad management. - AFP

We also have the recent Adam Air crash killing 102 people on board. Again, this happened in the midst of bad weather and being an Indonesian LCC, I suspect if safety standards has yet again being compromised. I said it once, I said it twice and I'll say it again. It is a result of our own doing.

The only thing that has nothing to do with us is probably the recent earthquake around Ta1wan. Undersea cables were snapped and plunging us into a communications blackout with the rest of the world. As luck would have it, my side is the most greatly affected given that 6 of the 7 undersea cables serving my side were damaged and bandwidth was instantly constricted. Repair ships were dispatched to the damage site and again due to bad weather, progress of repair was severely hampered. My side is not expected to return to full connectivity until mid January when Phase I of the repairs is expected to complete.

Anyway, it's a bad start to the new year but to every dark cloud is a silver lining.

Things can only get better from where we are now.
