Looks like it's YouTube week as it is just coincidental that all the entries this week involve YouTube clips. Another clip from Lancerlord showing my alma mata, ACJC with whom the students recently built a tiled wall.

Tiled Wall? It does sound pretty mundane but it's probably more of my lack of literary skills to bring the picture across.

Fortunately, there is the YouTube clip to bail me out on this one.

We had the "Smiley Cul-de-sac" and the "Wan Way Street" and now it looks like there is "The ROCK AC Wall" for me to check out with I return in December.

p.s. Anyone know what song is used in the clip? It's very catchy!

Armless Woman

Got this from Lancerlord and I am quite amazed at the agility of this lady. The clip looks very dated and I would speculated this to circa around the 1970s and judging from the use of Cantonese, I'd say this is a Hong Kong documentary. While the documentary was obviously scripted, the fact that woman was armless remained true.

Her determination not to be defeated by fate is admirable and it is a humbling lesson for the rest of us able-bodied people.

The Sushi Girl

It was Frank's birthday on the 27th of June where we were supposed to have dinner together and drinks thereafter. Instead, I was called away on a business trip that was too far away for me to get back in time to join the rest of the gang for dinner.

Anyway, something happened that night which prompted the gang rushing to tell me all about it first thing in the morning.

However, before I carry on, I must forewarn that what I am about to write may be deemed as objectifying women and as such, if you are the type who would be offended. Read no further.

By proceeding, you waive all rights to kpkb about moral issues, blah blah blah.

Now, there is this sushi place where we are regulars and it just so happened that in there, a waitress by the name of Hong, has a MEGA crush on Frank. Frank is the new guy who recently moved to our area from Ta1wan. Given that he is around our age, we got along well with each other and hang out together quite often.
As far as I know, the crush has been quite some time already and Frank and Hong have been talking to each other on the phone and sms-ing each other.

Now the bunch of us are known to be quite jee siao and knowing the Hong has this big crush on Frank, we purposely arranged to have the birthday dinner there. All of them were in the mood for "dinner theatre" that night.

"We almost brought popcorn to the sushi restaurant. Got show to see mah!"

Yah, as friends, we are all bastards.

The 7 of them (sans me) arrived at the sushi restaurant when they realised that it was Hong's off-day. They quickly called her on her mobile (from Frank's mobile) and told her to come to the restaurant to celebrate Frank's birthday. Hong quickly agreed (no surprises there) to come but told them to start ahead without her as she need to go shopping for a birthday gift.

So the gang started dinner and they ordered 2 flasks of Sake (I am guessing about 300ml each) and naturally as the birthday boy, Frank was the target of some drink goading. As it turned out, Frank finished a flasks by himself while the rest split the balance which isn't much to begin with.

I must say that as far as drinking is concerned, Frank failed miserably as a man for by the time he finished the flask of Sake (20% alcohol), our friend a bit seh liao......

Pause for a cause as I fill in a little more background information here. Frank has a girlfriend in Ta1wan and by the local moral yardstick, he is a faithful saint. He is aware that Hong had the hots for him but he is kinda stupid to continue to be the nice-we-are-just-friends-kinda-guy and it drove the love-stricken Hong wild, misinterpreting all the wrong signals. Now Frank is your typical SNAG and although SNAG is passé in our part of the world, it is certain all the rage here. To the Uber Male like me, I would regard the SNAG as a bladdy sissyboy but who am I to judge?
 
Anyway, Hong showed up right at the time when the cake was about to be cut and after settling the dinner bill, off they went to KTV to sing K and carry on drinking. Frank was gone-ded by the first whisky while Hong valiantly attempted to protect Frank by helping to drink.

That didn't last too long either as by the second whisky, the alcohol hit Hong full in the face and she was starting to go hysterical. She starting bawling her eyes out. She cried that Frank didn't want to take her home* that night.

* At this juncture, I don't need to explain "take her home", do I?

They were all like "HELLO? Frank passed out already!! How to take you home?"

Frankly (no pun intended), they were all taken aback, while they knew of this crush, they didn't know it was so serious. The whole idea of asking her to come was to just playfully tease the "couple". No one expected this to be likened to that of stepping on a land mine.

The party was cut short when the bawling sushi girl got a bit violent before the grand finale of puking all over herself.

The obvious solution is to book a hotel room above the KTV for the night and throw them both inside.

As I was told, everybody reached home before midnight. It was a short party.

What happened thereafter? Did they do it? Who makaned who?

Until I have a chance to meet Frank again, this entry shall be adjourned.
Oh yes, I don't think I will be going to the sushi restaurant any time soon.

TaiShan City, SiJiu Town

For those who noticed that I have been missing from MSN during last week, that's because I have been traveling. It was a case of "sit car more than sit office". We were on a trip to seek out new satellite factories that we can recruit to sub-contract our orders out, in the effort to ease the pressure of orders backlogged as well as to expand our output capacity.

On the recommendation of an existing satellite factory, we heading southwest to TaiShan City (台山市) SiJiu Town (四九镇). By my calculations, it should be about 330km away. Somewhat like making a trip up to KL from Singapore.

The closer we get to our destination, the smaller the roads. This was the path leading to the satellite factory that we are supposed to qualify. I kinds reminds me of Jalan Ulu Sembawang / Marsiling when I was in NS. Either that or one of the quaint little towns along N-S Highway like Yong Peng or Ayer Hitam.

As, I stepped out of the car, I took a look around to observe the environment. It's a quiet little town but given the number of people that I see in the vicinity, it is more of a village than a town as officially classified.

Probably a mass exodus of people (especially the young people) headed into the city to find better paying work. I speculate that this place, from my observation, used to be agricultural farmland and has since been abandoned to support the industralisation of the the city where it is deemed to be more lucrative.

This the biggest building in the town where it was supposed to be the satellite factory that we were supposed to do due diligence. As it turned out, it used to be the town's cinema where they used to screen those propaganda pro-party films. If you are hoping for Hollywood fare, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Anyway, this picture was taken as we were about to leave and it was about 5:30pm. Dinner time for these folks.

This is the entrance to the cinema/factory and on the other side of the board, there was a charts, on the other side, that said "Population: 1009" as this place also serve as the Family Planning Office (population control). I doubt if the chart is updated as I think there is not more than 200 people here.

 

This is the inside of the "cinema" that has since been converted into a woodworking factory. The wall you see in front of you is where the screen was supposed to be as the floor sloped down towards it.

This picture was taken in the adjacent building where the finishing of the products is done. This used to be somebody's home before it was abandoned and converted.

Verdict? This satellite facility was not up to our requirement as we deemed it too small to handle our sub-contracts.

slurp!: Southern parts of Spitland source their wood in the Hainan and Yunnan region. They are also known to import wood from their Myanmar neighbours at the border. Places like Inner Mongolia are also known to be a source of timber.

There are many species of wood available in Spitland. On top of the usual Pine, Birch, Ash, Poplar and Maple, there are the species with only Ch1nese names like 白木莲, 水曲柳 etc.. which I have no English translation for that.

GLA Attacked!

Glasgow Airport (GLA) was attacked in the afternoon (3:15 pm) on 30 Jun 2007 by a SUV crashing through the front glass door and blazing. Had the bollard not gotten in the way of the driver, the damage would have been more extensive as the car would have been able to drive further in and create even more serious damage. As far as I have read, there has been no innocent fatalities. Thank God. The driver and the passenger(s) probably suffered severe burns but there is no sympathies there from me there.

All these just mere days after new British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was sworn in. I suspect that all the attacks including the discovery and defusing of two car bombs in London filled with petrol and nails had something to do with the new PM. Perhaps Glasgow was targeted because Gordon Brown himself is a Scot?

As I read the news reports (Click Here), I ask myself who these attackers are i.e. what race and most of the reports have already anticipated this question and indicated them to be South Asian, a term which the British use to describe people from the Pakistan, Afghanistan region which indirectly mean the Islamic Fanatics.

The way I see it, no religion or right of mind will condone the taking of innocent lives. All these kill-all-infidels bullshit is just plain brain-washing of evil instigators. They are not Muslims and they must be denounced. They are an evil cult blaspheming the name of the Holy Prophet. I'd bet these instigators would cowered in fear if they were asked to be the martyrs themselves. Instead all they do is to conveniently point finger at other people to do their dirty work for them.

Just earlier, Heathrow and New York JFK were on high alert after discovery suspicious packages. No reports thereafter were available and so I think they were just false positive.

Now that the airports are back on high alert and security will clench up tight again, it is bad news for me as I am heading up to the US later in the month.

Fucking bastards.

Hey, happy belated birthday - was in the States till late Friday evening. Did you get my text message? Thank God we got through Heathrow ok. Saturday on our way up to visit my inlaws, there was a diversion on the motorway - we were told there was an 'accident'. Turned out that they were arresting two of the 5 people they've arrested so far in connection to this bombing!! how exciting!

EU Bans Indonesian Airlines

This just in on the news (EU to ban all Indonesian airlines - 28 Jun 2007). The European Union will ban all 51 Indonesian airlines from flying into the EU from next week as all of them are deem to be unsafe.

I have been covering the sad state of Indonesian travel safety for quite some time already and I guess the various countries are finally going to do something about it if the Indonesian gahmen aren't.

International air routes will be the only one where another country can do something about it since one of the two points (orgin & destination) will involve another country. So if either destination or orgin is banned, then the flight cannot take place.

Anyway, the announcement of the ban was just a day after this news article on ChannelNewsAsia.com (Indonesia Grounds Nine Airlines Over Safety Failures - 28 Jun 2007) of which the article mentioned that Garuda has returned to the top tier of air safety standards (according to Indonesian gahmen yardstick).

Obviously their so-called Top Tier of Air Safety is not good enough as the article on EU announcement to ban came just a day later. Coincidence of bad timing? I think not!

Again, another mallet to the face as opposed to the milder slap to the face.

In the meanwhile, the saga continues. Pace yourselves with the popcorn, this is going to be around for quite some time.

Terrible these indonesians. No safety standard at all. I remember many years ago, when I flew (as passenger) en-route to Bali on Garuda, I was in the toilet when the aircraft landed! How come the cabin crew never stopped me from going to the toilet??? I don't understand. Then, I was not a cabin crew yet so of course, I didn't know when I should go to the toilet and when not to. The cabin crew were like doing their own things and heck care you type. The whole atmosphere inside was very chin chai like that. - Hiao Auntie

Wikipedia

It all happened over lunch one day at the Grand Noble Hotel (they have the best pasta in the town of HuMen; unfortunately, they are the only place with decent pasta; fortunately, their pasta is very good; unfortunately, their service is very bad) where I was having a robust debate on the origins of chocolate or the cacao bean to be specific.

I insisted that it originated from Ethiopia while my opponent claimed Mexico. As it turned out, upon whipping out my phone's browser to get onto Wikipedia via GPRS, I realised I confused coffee bean with cacao bean, of which the former was indeed from Ethiopia.

When I got home later that evening, I fired up Wikipedia and started reading about cacao beans in greater depth. As anyone who has used Wikipedia would know, it transformed into a "one article after another" type of situation before one realised that it was already dead in the night as the clock above me had turned many rounds.

Akk: Do you know my favourite Bombay Sapphire gin and your favourite Grey Goose vodka are both under the house of Bacardi?

Next, I ventured into European history as I was currently watching all 9 seasons of 'Allo 'Allo!. I started reading about Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler, the Sturmabteilung (SA), the Schutzstaffel (SS), the Gestapo, the Beer Hall Putsch and the Third Reich, just to name a few.

Having covered that, I moved onto Ch1nese history, starting from The 3 Sovereigns and 5 Emperors (三皇五帝 2852 to 2205 BC) and currently at Spring and Autumn Period (春秋时代 722 to 481 BC).

Anyway, there has been concerns about over-reliance on Wikipedia as a source of facts as many article remained unverified. However, this is not really a concern to me as I find most of them to be fairly accurate.

Perhaps the key to the success of Wikipedia is that of its convenient to obtain instant access.

Go give it a try if you haven't already done so.

Wah... quite dry topics (to me). Unless, of course, you are interested in history. =) It was actually written in the unit outlines that you CANNOT use wiki as a source of reference. Sad sia. But really, I find it quite informative and very useful.

Anyway, it is getting fairly common for schools to ban Wikipedia as a credible reference. Quite rightly so given that, some of the topics are still ongoing, unverified work-in-progress.

i keep thinking you spell 'cocoa' wrongly...not until i clicked the wiki link then i know the tree where cocoa comes from is called cacao tree, not cocoa tree...that's one new thing i learned today =)

Cocoa or cacao? It is very confusing! I think cocoa is the seed in the pod of the cacao tree. Then again, I believe they are synonymous on the basis that perhaps one is the scientific latin name while the other is the common commercial name.

Back From Retirement

24 Jun 2008 (Tuesday) was the day I stepped out of retirement from the competition circuit. However, before anybody thinks that this is some big-shot tournament, it is not. This is just a business/social circle tournament organised amongst ourselves. Granted we have scratch golfers amongst our rank but a scorecard in the 70s should be good enough to clinch the Gross Score Champion and a low 80s scorecard will get you the Nett Score Champion trophy easily.

Due to hectic work schedule, I missed 6 of 12 legs of the competition last season and so I thought if I am going to be so busy with work, why bother signing up and wasted the RMB 3500 entry fee? Also, I get hassled by the organisers each time I miss a leg. Yeah, these are very enthusiastic folks.

So anyway, here I am back out of retirement again as I kena pressured by my friend who is this season's Captain and so if I don't sign up, it means I don't give him face. Yeah, face is a very important thing to us Chinese folks. Sigh...

Anyway, there I was arriving on the dot to check-in at the register.

Bad omen #1. My name is not on the register. It's seems like they have struck me off and forgotten about me already.

When I got to the starter's office.

Bad omen #2. My main caddy was on leave and so I arranged for my back up caddy to carry my bags for that day only to find out that she didn't turn up for work that fateful day. Of all the days to go AWOL, why today??!!! God dammit!! You're fired!

I started off pretty strongly with a display of new flawless golf in the front 9 that put me easily in the Top10. Granted that we didn't have scoreboards to show real-time standings but experience told me that I am somewhere near the top.

Come the turnaround and everything starts to fall apart. Granted that I was able to recover from a few mistakes like a 190-yard green-in-regulation recovery shot after a dismal tee off, followed by a simple 2-putt to save par. That and an almost identical save from 180 yards for a fortunate bogey.

Look at the picture above and you won't believe me if I told you that it was taken on the day Typhoon FengShen came.

I was on the 15th hole when the sky suddenly turned dark and boy was it quick. The winds started howling from out of the blue and a look up into the sky and we could see a mass of dark clouds rushing in our direction like a speeding truck. It was a mad rush to whip out the rain cover to pull over our clubs and a mad speeding down the cart part towards the halfway house. The rain came in so fast, we were drenched before we even goto the shelter.

The rain drops came falling down fast and furious and it would have hurt like hell if you were to just stand there in the rain. That's how bad the rain was.

Then it was announced that the tournament was abandoned due to the bad weather while we waited for the rain to pass.

15 minutes later, the rain stopped and the organisers did a check on the grounds before making a u-turn decision to resume play. Apparently, that wasn't the typhoon but a mere preview of what's to come.

I finished the rest of the holes with 2 pars and 2 bogeys to finished with a so so 87. That puts me in 16th place out of a unusually small turnout of 56 participants.

Oh well, it doesn't really matter. I never took it seriously anyway, just an excuse for me to get out of the office to get some sun.

p.s. By the way, this season's trophy is unusually FUGLY. I think I'll give it a miss.

Zodiac

Zodiac was supposedly released in Singapore on 31 May 2007 but somehow I haven't heard anyone talk about it since.

I supposed given the flooding influx of Hollywood fare during the summer, the movies are all starting to look alike and perhaps it is no surprise if peope were to overlook this one.


However, one name caught my attention. No. It wasn't the obvious Robert Downey Jr. (Ally McBeal). Neither is it Mark Ruffalo (Just Like Heaven) nor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) nor Anthony Edwards (E.R.).

It's David Fincher. The director of my all-time favourite film, Se7en. Other films under his direction that you may be familiar with are Alien3, Fight Club and Panic Room.

Fincher is also known to be very involved in music videoes, having worked with famous names like Paula Abdul, George Michael, Sting, Aerosmith and Madonna.

Anyway, I have not seen the movie myself and as such unable to comment on it yet.

For what I have heard, this is going to be a very very fast-paced movie buckling you down to your seat all the way until the end of the movie.

Don't be surprised to find your feet asleep as you got so captivated by the plot that you have forgotten the rest of your body functions. Ok ok. Just kiddingly exaggerating there.

I should be catching the movie later this week. Will leave an after-note of what I thought of the movie here when I have seen it.

After Note: I managed to *cough* download *cough cough* a copy of the movie and has so far watched 15 minutes of it before I stopped. Thoughts thus far? Not as dramatic and violent as Se7en and certainly more subtle. I stopped due to the fact that the quality was quite bad and the 15 minutes was enough to convince me to stop not because it is not good but because this movie deserved to be watched proper. I shall get the DVD when it is released in the US on 24 Jul 2007. Perfect timing as I would be in the US during that time.

Overall, I think it is still good but I have a feeling that the good guys would win this time. Dang.

i watched it and i think it was not as nice as i have expected it. there were certain parts which i felt the excitement factor was not enough. and the plot could have been more captivating. overall, i thought it was ok. but failed in my expectations of the movie before i watched it

Winter: I agree that this film is not Fincher's best but despite that, it is still pretty good. I recommend that you catch Se7en and use it to compare with this one.

I believe Fincher to be a excellent director and this current Zodiac does not do him enough justice.
