Getting Drunk vs Getting Buzzed

I was surfing the web and reading blogs until I dozed off at the laptop. Fret not, it wasn't because your blog was that boring (even if it were, I won't tell you!). I just had a bit too much wine at dinner earlier.

Sometimes we asked ourselves why do people get drunk and often than not the answer is merely a mirror away. We or rather I drink to get that high, to chase that buzz or simply put to experience that "happy feeling". However, the line separating buzz and drunk is so thin that it is easily breached in the split of a second. As a result, we often find ourselves doing idiotic things and saying stupid stuff. If nobody got hurt, then it's fine. Otherwise, the hurt can be very damaging and permanent.

I believe drunks can be grouped into 5 categories.

1) The Fighter
Most likely a guy in this group. He becomes aggressive and violent. Suddenly, the alcohol effect charges up his male ego bravado and getting into fights or starting to throw/break things are not uncommon. Suddenly, the whole world is his enemy and worse, he thinks he is invincible. Problem is that somebody, be it himself or others will get hurt. Sometimes it may take 3 or 4 of us to pin him down to the ground. The ultimate loser is himself as the people around him will start to siam far far away and think of him as a lesser person after that night. Unless of course, the people were his good "brothers" to begin with, of which he is a lesser person since day 1.

I have seen girls, although rare, in this category too but if she small small petite petite, I will just go grab her, sling her over my shoulder, kicking, screaming and scratching, and take her home before she embarrass herself further. If she damn tua jiak, than I siam one corner liao... arh bor she will go grab me, sling me over her shoulder, kicking, screaming and scratching, and take me home before I embarrass myself further.

Sigh....

2) The Blabber.
At first, he may be the quiet quiet guy in the group but once the alcohol kick in, everything also come out from the mouth and I don't mean the puke. Usually, this can be quite funny but if the fella is spouting nonsensical stuff or even slurring... then no fun liao. I ever encountered this guy, Meng, who was drunk but able to walk on his own after partying to go for prata supper. Suddenly Meng decided to just stand up from the table and start practicing his WuShu.

We were so embarrassed when the whole kopitiam was staring at us in disbelief.

We couldn't get him to stop as we were afraid of the accidental punch/kick/body slam/suplex/etc. After all, this guy knew his martial arts. As he was going through his routine with commentary(!), he explains that he was trying to exercise his "qi" in order to "curb" the alcohol. *face palm*.

Naturally, the next morning, he was all sheepish about the night before.

3) The Confessor
This type by far causes the most damage when drunk. I was here on a few occasions which I am not proud of. You will have to agree that in society, be it at work or elsewhere, we put on a mask to face the world and show what we want people to see. The problem in this category is that alcohol has the ability of unmasking you without you knowing it. With inhibition thrown out of the window, the truth comes out. And sometimes, the truth hurts. It really hurts.

What came out of my mouth was my heart speaking and it certainly didn't go down too well with a lot of people. Many were offended. This is a real pickle here when you have to apologise to the offended party for telling the honest truth. The question is, how do you apologise to people for not lying? It is like "Oh, I am sorry, I was honest with you last night. I should have lied instead."

See the problem there?

Well, the last time, I landed in this predicament was 8 years ago. Damage was still unrepairable at some places with some people till this very day.

4) The Bawler
No matter how strong the man is, tears flow freely when this guy falls into this category. Sobbing uncontrollably would have been a more apt description. While many would associate crying with that of the female gender, I have personally encountered more men bawling their eyes out than women when drunk.

The last most memorable incident was during my University Ball where a good junior of mine, Zhen, decided that the Ball was the perfect opportunity to profess his love for this girl. Perhaps, he was thinking that with him in the tuxedo and she in the gown, what better moment to "let it all out" under the romantic mood lighting of the ball room (and perhaps get lucky later in a room that he had earlier reserved?)?

What he didn't expect was that not only did she say "No", she negate his advances by introducing her newly found boyfriend to him. The devastation of was too much for Zhen that night for not only because he was rejected but the fact he was rejected in front of everybody. Zhen, being an pretty egoistical person, lost more face than he could afford that night and it was no surprise that he drank himself stupid that night.

He cried and cried and cried. Sigh.... a perfect good tux ruined that night.

5) The Sleeper.
This is where I find myself most of the time. Unconscious with the occasional *SNORT*. People may say that this is by far the best of the 5 groups but let me warn you of the disadvantage of this category. If you are among friends, then you are safe. If not, who knows what the people around you are going to do to you?

I am not sure if anyone remember a case in Zouk many years ago. A lawyer (guy) passed out drunk only to wake up on his bed with some other guy's head bobbing up and down below him. The latter was charged and jailed but imagine the psychological damage inflicted on the poor guy for life.

Here's the strange thing. Dozing off is something very common for me when it comes to wine, champagne and beer. Despite the higher alcohol content, I am perfectly fine with spirits like Vodka, Rum, Gin, Whiskey or even a teh-tarik of all of the above.

I supposed what I want to say here is that we should all drink within our limits. If 2 drinks is all you can tahan, then so be it. If you know that he/she can only take 2 drinks, then for f*ck's sake, get off his/her back about it. Unless he/she is an asshole that deserves to be pumped jialat jialat, then I would gladly make an exception.

Well, easier said than done, as we do get carried away sometimes as we egged or kena egged into drinking ourselves into a messy drunken stupor.

Oh well, I guess taking the cab back would have been the last saving consolation. Please put your car keys behind if you are going to be drinking heavily.

You forgot one more, The Merlion.
This kind will drink drink drink, then puke to empty the stomach. drink drink drink somemore and puke to empty the stomach and drink drink...

The only time they stop is when 1. They ran out of money to buy more beer. 2. The bar is closing. 3. The bar ran out of supply. 4. He puke his stomach out.

Mad One: No actually. I was focusing more on behavior here. Each one of these 5 categories can perform the Merlion.

I knew of this guy who did the Merlion in his sleep. By the time he wakes up in the morning, his puke as harden onto his face into some kind of a facial mask. It was a kangkong mask. I'd bet it did his complexion a lot of good. :P

dinner cum drinking sessions are pretty common in china. after the session, when you get back to your hotel room and starting to puke besides the toilet bowl, you get this lousy feeling of 'what the fuck, why am i doing this', 人家出钱我出命, and a feeling of loneliness will engulf you. you'll miss home, you'll miss your love ones.

well i can't say anything for myself. Vodka, rum, gin and whiskey sound like army codewords to me - i havent tried one before, let alone stepped into a club! Drink, Don't Drive. Suck, Also Don't Drive - Supplement

Just a quick follow-up to my earlier entry, as a result of a late night chat with a dear friend who shall remained anonymous.

[Sucking a Fisherman's Friend] here refers to eating the mint sweet.

AND NOT

[Sucking off a Fisherman's "Friend"].

Thank you for your attention.

Drink, Don't Drive. Suck, Also Don't Drive

Sucking a Fishermen's Friend could get you into trouble

Police in Germany are warning motorists that sucking a Fishermen's Friend could get them into trouble.

It comes after a 24-year-old driver was found to be over the legal drink-drive limit during a routine control in Munich.

He was taken to the police station where blood tests found he had no alcohol in his system.

The man was released after officers found the strongest thing he had taken was a Fisherman's Friend.

Forensic doctor Thomas Gilg said the essential oils contained in the throat sweets reacted in the same way as alcohol on hand-held breathalysers.

He said in tests they found just three of the mentholated sweets could cause a motorist to test three times over the legal limit.

Drink-driving offenses in Singapore is a big NO-NO, says in the traffice police. Kena caught and your ass will be hauled up to court. Big fine, license kena kantong and if you are suay, the courts may even throw in a free holiday-stay in prison.

As a result, it is no surprise that this topic has always been one of the favourites during coffeeshop-talk. How many kopi-sessions have we spent sitting down and hatching all kinds of hare-brained ideas in our attempt to so called "beat the system"?

If you kena blocked and pulled over at the police stop, your primary goal is to siam the breathalyzer at all cost. Coz if the breathalyzer reaches to your mouth, it is all over (assuming you have been drinking, of course). Your only hope is that you are lucky enough to get the yellow light and not the red.

Stupid as it may sound, many of us had the optimistic notion that a mint in your mouth can "fool" the breathalyzer i.e. no smell of alcohol = no alcohol.

It is akin to closing your eyes and declaring the person standing in front no longer exist. Yes, it may sound dumb thinking that popping mints will solve all your problems. However, think about this, if we are really that smart, then why are we still drinking and driving then?

Anyway, got this from Ananova and it seems that Fisherman's Friend (herein known as "The Mint") gets your into trouble with the breathalyzer, regardless.

Also, let it be known, dear fellow road users, that the machine tests for traces of alcohol in the breath and not if your breath got alcohol smell or not.

Therefore, I close this entry with this advice.

Drink, Don't Drive. Suck Fisherman's Friend, Also Don't Drive.

Actually what happened was that I went to a pub earlier to pick up a friend who has passed out drunk already. However, to get in, I had to pay the 2-drink cover charge before they let me in. So I guess when I downed the two drinks at one go before leaving kinda raised the false alarm.

As for to siam the the gf/wife (mistress need to siam meh?), may I suggest you keep tooth brush, tooth paste and a bottle of water in the car. ~LOL

Nasty Noodles!

Spotted this on the South China Morning Post dated 30 Sep 2005. Click picture to enlarge, in order to read the article in full.

Frankly, these things are fairly common over here, where we have greedy unscrupulous merchants risking the lives of the general public in order to earn an extra buck. How often have I heard of mass food poisoning during Mid-Autumn Festival where mooncakes were found to have the fillings left over from last year's batch? They simply scraped away the green moldy layer that formed over the months and plonked the rest back into the mixer to produce the current batch of mooncakes.

Or how about the slaughterhouses who were selling pork from diseased or even dead pigs to the wholesalers? It was so bad that even the butchers at the slaughterhouses themselves fell ill.

I could just go on and on.

Sigh.....

Tracking The Ancestral Trail (Part 3)

Here's a simple diagram to show where Gabriel and I stand in the family tree dating back to the founding of the Ancestral Temple. It appears to be a gap between me and the youngest of the tree. It kinda gave us an insight as to the different cultures in different places, although we are from the same family. My guess for the gap is perhaps folks in Ch1na marry and have kids at a much younger age than the folks in my line since the migration to Ta1wan?

So technically, there is a young boy (whom I heard was born in Hong Kong) who has to address me as his Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grand-Uncle. Aiyoh....

This plaque is located on the left of the temple and on it is the inscription of the pioneer ancestor's words to us, descendants. All I can say is damn cheem siah..... this is going to take me quite a bit of time to decipher it. Any "better-player" Ch1nese students out there able to lend me a hand here?

As you can see, my pioneer ancestor is quite the scholar here and I guess a scholar back then is definitely regarded more highly then the "scholars" of today that we have in Singapore. Quite sad, hor?

Just a few candid shots that I took along the way. They were glad to have one of their own return home after so many years away. Firecrackers where blasting away machiam like it was Chinese New Year. My ears were ringing throughout the day. Nice Ah Pek here had to clean up the bits of firecrackers for us. Oops.

For those who have been following since Part 1, we were in the middle of a hurricane and the front porch of the temple got all slushy and muddy to the extend where we found our van sinking into the mud.

A nice picture showing all the folks uniting as one family to get the job done.

BUT before you guys start to point finger and ask why I am not there helping to push. My response is simple.

"If I go down, who take photo?"

I am a step ahead of you guys. Hah!

p.s. Actually, I suggested ditching the van there and take another car until the weather dries out. But stubborn as the old folks are, they insisted on getting the van out. So ok lor. Go ahead lor. I take picture ok? :P

Tracking The Ancestral Trail (Part 2)

This is the altar on the right where it houses the tablets of the later ancestors. Judging by the number of this tablets being cramped inside, I take it as this is the Economy Class cabin. No? :P

The lanterns above the folks have special meanings. Each lantern represents a family tree branch's bloodline i.e. a male heir carrying on the surname further. This only applies to the first son in that particular household. Second son onwards do not need to have any more lanterns to represent their household.

This in Hokkien is known as Tian Teng (添灯 - Adding of Lantern), of which the Ch1nese phrase (添丁 - Adding of Son) originated from. Hence, this is also perhaps why we have "添丁发财" as a well-wish.

Obviously with a family tree spanning over half a millenium, you would expect to the a lot of lanterns abound but I counted less than a 50 in the temple. I supposed all this is done on a voluntary basis whether or not, you are bothered to make an effort carrying on the tradition. This has taught me a valuable lesson that day i.e. we need to think about us as individual members of a family on how we are to make a contribution towards the family. Too many times are we guilty of taking the family for granted and expect the family to serve you instead of the other way round.

Tip of the day: Neglect your family and you may one day realised that it is no longer there. The grim fact about it is there is no way back.

Here are our lanterns being hoisted up. This is to the mark the birth of Gabriel as Generation 21 of our family bloodline.

I guess this is also a sign of the times as our family moves along with time. Gabriel's lantern is the first electric lantern in the temple.

Spotted this at the side of the temple and it is quite a grim picture. While I am not sure what all these discarded lanterns were doing there (damaged, old, retired, replaced?), it got me thinking about Doh Pang (倒房). This is where the particular family branch die off without a son to continue the bloodline. It also got me thinking that the growing of a family tree isn't always a rosy picture. While some branches may blossomed to many new branches, there are also branches that terminate just like that.

Click here to proceed to Part 3.

mihuatang: I guess that would depend if you are able to find anything that your grandfathers left you, that would provide that vital link.
Also, there are many cases where your surname today is different from last time. Some families changed their surnames to avoid execution or when they are trying to hide from their enemies during exile.
One of the gruesome examples is where the emperor decreed a 灭九族 i.e. uprooting your entire family tree. No one, not even the women and children will be spared.

Tracking The Ancestral Trail (Part 1)

I was in Xiamen over the Ch1na National Day holidays when Typhoon Longwang decided to come smack us right between the eyes. Fortunately for us, the typhoon's path was blocked by the island of Ta1wan and so the intensity of the typhoon was severely subdued. Still it was rain, rain and more rain as we found ourselves imprisoned in your own hotel rooms. Perfect for me as it was the best opportunity for me to catch up on my sleep. What better way to catch your siesta on the upgraded top floor corner room of the spanking new Sofitel Plaza Xiamen? Ahhh..... zzzzzzzz

My ancestral home is located in the town of HengLim (杏林). Although, it was quite near to downtown, getting there was quite a challenge as the final stretch to the home was an alley that snakes around the houses. As the alley was merely a little wider than a car's breadth. We had to navigate the car slowly and carefully while we negotiate each turn.

What you see here is the facade of the ancestral temple and it has been there for over 500 years. It has long been declared as an heritage landmark which explains the development all around us except the temple.

This is the name of my clan. The TingYinTong. Wah... machiam secret society siah. Hur hur hur....

The praying really no joke. I remembered the last time I did it 3 years ago, I prayed until kena backside cramp. Here's what I had to do. First pray to Tee Kong (Sky God). I had to kneel, kow tow 3 times, stand up, kneel again, kow tow 3 times, stand up and then kneel 3rd time, kow tow 3 more times. Then it's the same thing praying to Tor Teh Kong (Earth God), 3 kneels & 9 kow tows. After that it's the later ancestors which is another 3 & 9. Before finally the big boss himself, the Pioneer Ancestor where I had to do another 4 & 12. My legs and butt ached for a week after that. Luckily this time was ok. Perhaps it was the gym sessions started to pay off?

My only dilemma is that I had to joss-stick pray to the "Gods" when it's not really "my thing", but I decided to just go through with it to appease the folks.

This chap here is the most senior person in the clan. He is the same generation as my Great Grandfather. Respect. Respect.

These are the tablets of my ancestors. The solo tablet right at the top is the Pioneer Ancestor who started this temple. He had 6 wives then and I came from the line of the second wife.

There was a story behind this temple. Right behind the temple is another ancestral temple belonging to the Zheng family. Zheng was an official in the government and before we prospered, this chap used to bully my pioneer ancestor's family jialat jialat. Eventually, when we hit pay-dirt, my pioneer ancestor not only became an government offical as well, but one that lagi outranked the Zhengs. So as an act of revenge, my pioneer ancestor build our ancestral temple bigger and right in front of the Zhengs' ancestral temple totally sealing off the latter's front door, which in a way, also cut off the latter's feng shui. Revenge is sweet.

Talk about being guai lan. This one takes first prize. Mai siao siao hor....

mihuatang: Over here, we call it the 族谱 (or is it 祖谱?). It was brought over
from Ch1na to Ta1wan before handing it down the generations to us.
Had it not been for this book, we wouldn't have found the ancestral temple. Quite a
thick book with lots of details.
We are currently working on updating it. The next edition should be ready before
the coming Ch1nese New Year.

kIm: Probably because after more than 500 years of sitting at the same place,
the temple is very unlikely to come visit us instead. :P
Ok ok but seriously, we wanted to go down earlier to register the birth of Gabriel
but didn't have the time until last weekend.

Akk: Indeed. Quite an interesting part of your heritage to learn and
discover. You would be shocked about my Taiwanese part of the ancestry. We used to
own half of Taipei's land. That would be another blog another time. Probably I will
tell this story during the Ching Ming Festival next year. Akan datang.

I'm glad to know you actually bother going back to your ancestral village, keeping in touch with your relatives, and you even know your family tree and which line you came from! That's really impressive. Most people nowadays wouldn't even know where they ancestral village is, much less go back to visit.
And Ting Yin Tong really sounds like some Sar Luk Kow kinda gang name, heh.

Milktea: I think a compromise has to be reach here between joss-stick folks and their Christian son/daughter.
I took the joss stick as my way of paying respect to the tradition, the ancestors, etc. I am still in every way a Christian.
On the flip side, for those who attends church regularly and fervently, I don't see them as any more of a Christian than I. We are all the same under God, regardless of race, language or religion/faith.

Fellowship Of The Rings - JayWalk's Style

Ok enough of the funny stuff for a while as I get down to something a little bit more subdued.

I was chatting with AKK and we touched on the topic of friends and I realised I have heck of a LOT of them. During my partying days, bumping into over a hundred friends in a single night at Zouk or Mohd Sultan is pretty much a common thing for me.

Anyway, this is not what this blog is all about. I apologise if you have been misled into this thinking that this is the blog of an arrogant bastard of a braggart.

Actually, AKK got me thinking about my friends and where they stand in my life, which led me into coming up with some sort of a theory.

Hence, allow me to present to you The Ten Rings Of Fellowship.

Imagine a dart board of concentric circles. Now look at the red bull's eye right in the middle. That's you.

The First Ring, which is immediately outside the bull's eye, is where your closet core friends are. They are the type of friends who would take a bullet for you and vice versa. They are the type that you would raise their children if they unexpectedly die and of course, vice versa.

The Second Ring are those whom you connect at the heart-to-heart level. Quite a few people here as we confide our deepest thoughts and secrets to each other. Strictest confidence is kept voluntarily here.

The Third Ring are those who are good friends and you are really glad to see and hang around with. Whenever there is something going on, like a party or a gathering, you would definitely save a place for them. However, as for the matters of the heart, it is still at arm's length.

The Fourth Ring are those you always hang out with but without needing to make an effort to meet up. These are the folks you see on a regular basis e.g. your lunch gang at work or the clique within the office. Your niche group in sunday's church etc. We take being together for granted no effort is made since everybody is going to be there anyway. When you are together, everybody has a great time but when the event is over e.g. after work, then everybody goes about their separate lives.

The Fifth Ring are just normal friends, that most of the time, you meet somewhere and go "Hey long time no see! How are you? We must meet for lunch some day!" and you did.

The Sixth Ring is the same as Fifth except that the "Hey long time no see! How are you? We must meet for lunch some day!" but never did. And the next time when you meet up again, the same thing repeats.

The Seventh Ring are the acquaintances. You know each other but that's about it. The only time you guys hang together is when there is no one else. e.g. at a wedding where you are a total stranger at your table and so is he/she.

The Eight Ring are the people whom they know you but you don't know them. Likewise for the opposite direction where you know who they are but they don't know who you are.

The Ninth Ring are the so-called friends of friends. For example, you are at this party and your host introduced the two of you like "Hey Jay, this is Chris. Chris, this is Jay". You established a temporary friendship at the time which may be over and back to strangers as soon as the party is over.

And finally the Tenth Ring where these are the people where the friendship has soured or drifted too far away. Messy break-up ex-girlfriends are the common people in this ring. So are those whom you had a bad argument with and vowed never to speak to each other again.

So there. My Ten Rings of Fellowship. On top of that, there is an added dimension to these rings and that is the depth of which each friend resides on that ring. Obviously the longer you stayed at a certain ring the deeper you will be entrenched into that ring and also there is that opportunity to moving up or down a ring or two. However, there is also the possibility of getting too entrenched in a particular ring that both parties become complacently comfortable in that ring that they are stuck there forever.

Mostly, a person would start from the outside and slowly work their way in. However, with the introduction of blog and the blogo-community. There is a shortcut. That is the one thing I like about the blogging community and that is that it can be that ladder in the game "Snakes and Ladders" and cut right through the rings and go straight for the inner circles.

Because of the fact that online friends dispensed with the outer exterior that we are able to access each other's insides right away, where we get to know the real each other. Of course, there may be the case of an online "friend", hiding behind the anonymity of a moniker that he/she may be misleading you into thinking he/she is somebody that he/she is not. Perhaps that's why meeting up after getting to know each other online is a bonus, though not necessarily vital.

Despite the shortcut of the "ladder", there is no quick way to the depth of the ring. A very good blogging friend may be able to drop right into say, the Second Ring, but it will only at best, be at the surface of the ring. A lot more is required for the new friend to actually have a steady and secure foothold in that ring. The stronger the foothold, the deeper inside that ring.

To those friends who read my blog, you know who you are and you should probably know where you are.

To the rest. How do you classify your friends?

i do not think i have so many rings. maybe 3-5. and from one ring to another, there is no clear cut lines between them. more like shades inside of a clear cut line.

Eddy: A very simple model for you as I see that you tend to see things more in black and white than me. The reason for so many rings is perhaps the fact that I count the grey areas as an independent ring.

8. akk left...
Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:09 am
heheheh...u want to add 'levels' to your rings? then it'll be seriously multiplex...so a fren A is 3rd ring, level 2 and B is 5th ring, level 110. It's nice to have a system like this and although u say u treat grey areas as circles, the labeling is still clear-cut. OTOH, some frens can be absolutely misnomers...dunno where to put them....How about frens you really want to keep but dun actually chup u that much? I've a few like that.

Zeenie: Actually, I was thinking of a dart board when I came up with it. Online friends in the blogosphere is like I said that ladder in the Snake-&-Ladder board game where it gives you the ladder to go right in.

However, because of the fact that such friendships are not built over time, they too can fade away just as quickly and again like the snakes in the same board game.

I Want To Spray Shit Smear Wall

(((((((((( In GB 2312 Where Available ))))))))))

最近 hor, 很多本地 Blogger 开始兴起用中文写 Blog 的潮流. 开始带头的就是那个那个裙下很多阿炳 (Ah Beng) 的 Blinkymummy. And then hor, Jaschocolate 也跟着流行跑 liao.

这样 hor, 我要不写中文 Blog hor 就会很 下雪 xiaxue sia suay leh. 但是 hor, 我的中文只有六点半 (half past six) 而已. Siao liao.

(Five Body Throw Floor).

其实, 给我这个 idea 的是 Precious-Jas 给我的灵感的. Tank Cue Berry March!

Wah lan eh!

苦不怕 = Hardship not scared. 不怕苦 = Not scared hardship. 怕不苦 = Scared no hardship.

Just a clever play in words through rearrangement and yet still agar agar yield the same meaning. Putting all 3 will futher emphasise it.
