Catching Up During CNY

Chinese New Year has long been a time for me to catch up with my wife's side of the family. Given that my own are peppered all around the world from QQLand to USA to Taiwan, the concept of visiting for my side of the family is non-existent during the festive season.

So all that is left whenever I am back in Singapore for CNY, is the wife's side of the family which by the way, is rather big.

Our standard pattern is to visit the wife's paternal and maternal grandmas at their respective place and this is also an opportunity to catch up with the cousins, and bro/sis-in-laws whom I have gotten to know some well in the last 11 years.

Anyway, there was this one girl whom I am always happy to see. We aren't very close to each other but we do like to chit chat together whenever we bump into each other.

Like me, we are extended members of the wife's family tree. Her kid is now 3 years' old and that means that she stopped working 4 years ago. Given that she married into our family from a far away land i.e. she was all alone here when she first arrived. Her job was the only place for her to be outside the house and to make new friends. All that was taken away when she had the baby.

Now that the kid is old enough and they have a domestic helper to assist, she is thinking of going back out to work. Alas the husband, being somewhat of an old skool MCP, disallowed it.

"I feel so useless." she lamented.

It broke my heart hearing her say that in such a dejected tone. Surely this is not the life she had imagined that she'd living for the rest of her life. What happened?

My advice to her was for her to get a hobby to do something that would be some sort of a 精神寄托.

I suggested that perhaps she should start a blog and give herself an outlet. I said to come to me if she runs into problem with the setting up of the blog or to learn how to use it.

I also gave her my blog URL for her to read.

I hope she will be ok.

More Shit From The Hole

Let's face it. It is a FARKING STOOPID idea that is doomed to failure. Not say I wet blanket but this type of thing no need intermolecular agribiologist to tell you that confirm sure buang one.

Spotted this entry on my Bloglines and it's written by Naiveguy. There is a bit of dark history of the CowBoyBar about:
  • A feud with the Outlaws. I heard other people talked about this incident also but I can't really say anything cause I was not there myself.
  • A feud with CowBoyCaleb. Ah this one I was around when it happened. Fortunately, there is no need to take sides on this one as the incident resolved itself with the departure of the feuding ex-barfly. Also the fact, that I can't be arsed to really chup this matter.
  • Delicate tension between CowBoyCaleb and his BFF. There's the explanation while CowBoyCaleb diam diam over the whole Association Of Bloggers (Singapore) nonsense and yet linked every blog about it. I believe the reason behind it in Naiveguy's entry is accurate.

Anyway, I think as far as the BFF thing is heading, it's next better player liao loh. Who want to apply? Please send your CV to my email. Thanks.

Well, like I said, there is no intention to 'control' the blogosphere or to tell people what to do, so how so was I attempting to be an 'Overlord'?
Anyway, I already said on my blog that I will make an announcement after CNY which was supposed to be on Wed. Before I could do that, you jumped the gun with this.

Rachel: Let me just say everything including my responses to your MSN (sorry, I sleep liao, last night).

First of all. I have nothing against you. I just think the AoB is a stupid idea and that you are joining it. Still, while I am labeling it as stupid and "bashing" it, you don't see me stopping you right?

Also, this entry was meant to be a commentary on what has being published out there. It is not an investigative piece and as such I don't see a need to do a fact finding. In short, I read, I feel, I write.

I did not write this to bait traffic. I don't need the "extra" traffic, not like I have a revenue stream I need to take care of. And I've checked my stats. Nope. No spike in traffic so far. So you can't say I am using it to bait traffic. Besides, I would have used something better if I wanna bait traffic. This is lousy bait if you ask me.

To quote a chinese proverb. 良药苦口,忠言逆耳. You may hate me now but I hope it will be different as time goes by.

And my final parting note. I am not sorry I "jumped the gun" to your Wednesday announcement. Unfortunate coincidence but I control the timing of my OWN entry. You ownself say you not Overlord right?

Peace.

Story Of The Man In The Hole

This is the story of a man who dug himself into a hole and it wasn't before long that he realised that he couldn't get out.

Then came this brilliant idea (or so he thought) that if he continue to dig deeper, he will eventually hit water. And hoping when the water starts coming out, it would eventually start filling the hole that he dug and thus be able to float up to the opening of the hole and climb out.

But there were two problems.

1) He never hit water.

2) He got in so deep that the earth that he dug up no longer able to be tossed out of the hole. The earth, at best, were feebly thrown against the wall of the hole only to have them fall back in. In short, whatever earth he dug up, stayed inside the hole.

The man died of starvation....

.... and stupidity.

Moral Of The Story: If you brought in a diarrhoeic farting elephant by mistake, get out of the house right away. Fanning furiously trying to CLEAR THE AIR, not only is futile, it also makes you look stupid.

Association Of Bloggers (Singapore)

So some bloggers out there set up an association of Singapore bloggers and proclaim it (or at least they want) to be the authority "to accredit bloggers", "to educate bloggers and improve the quality of blogs" and even to the extent of "dispute resolution".

ZHUN BOR?

AOBS want to accredit limpeh's blog?

AOBS want to educate limpeh and improve the quality of limpeh's blog?

 ZHUN BOR?

Just because they are registered with the Registrar of Societies, suddenly they are lord over the Singapore Bloggers?

ZHUN BOR?

Early early didn't we have Tomorrow.sg and it flopped?

So what makes AOBS any better? SGD 50 entrance fee + SGD 60 annual subscription leh! That's a lot of money for dunno what the member will get in return wor!

Let Limpeh tell you what I can do with SGD 110.00

With SGD 110.00, I can
  • buy 30 System-7 TOTO tickets. Chinese New Year Jackpot coming liao!
  • buy 3kg of Lexandria's father's bak kwa.
  • buy 7 Kilkenny's to drink with Ahtiong73 at Wala Wala.
  • buy 1 bottle of Bruno Paillard Blanc de Blanc (Non-vintage).
  • buy 3 bottles of wine from sexy chiobus selling them out of their Mercedes' car boot.
  • buy 1 month membership at FitnessFirst gym.
  • buy-in to the office BanLuck session.
Seriously what for I spend that kind of money not knowing what I am paying for?

Why you never say can buy 5 dresses from xtraliciousshop.com?! *bitchslap*
The best thing about blogging and social media is its freedom - you can't stop people from saying what they feel and it's the honest to god best thing when you want to hear the truth. ;)
I respect you for writing about your thoughts in an honest and steady manner and not go the ball-less route of 'lend knife kill people'. Friends don't expect each other to support blindly or sacrifice their freedom of thinking.
So, some folks are asking if I am mad - my answer is ya: only because you never say can buy dresses from my shop :P

Only make money online bloggers will join while casual blogger like me won't. But even if I blog for money and I wouldn't give a damn about the accredition as long as I make money not as if I am getting a Nobel Prize for joining.
The accredition thing lacks authority.
They want blogs to be a reliable source of information, maybe we should turn our blogs into CNN or CNBC for better credibility.

Tennis Wrist

Had a great tennis game over the weekend.

No, it wasn't the forehand drive that got my dear friend keeled over and on the floor clutching his nads.

Rather, it was the rediscovery of my serve. I haven't served so well in more than 10 years. It was akin to reuniting with an old friend after so long.

Everyone was shocked, including myself who have been struggling to serve for the past 2 months. Last Saturday, everything suddenly just clicked and I was serving as if I was smashing wiffleballs.

Alas, that came with a price as although I didn't feel anything the day after, I was paying it full price on Monday barely even able to hold a pen properly.

The left carpal started to swell as there was pooling of fluids and the whole area became tender and at times painful.

It got so bad that I had to drive to the nearest pharmacy, during my lunch break, to buy painkillers and crepe bandage.

The moment I stepped back into the office with a bandaged wrist, all the PCC jokes come out liao. KNN.

D-Boy: Oi! What happened to your hand?

JayWalk: Sprained it lah.

D-Boy: Too much of this har? *hand doing the wanking motion*

JayWalk: HARLOW! If it is that, *hand doing the wanking motion*, IT WOULD BE THE GIRL HAVING THE BANDAGED WRIST LAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

D-Boy: ahahahahaha

Gotta love them colleagues. Fun bunch.

p.s. Looks like I may be out of tennis action for two weeks. Wish me a miraculous recovery before this coming Saturday's game.

The Boon Of Small Cars

I went to Kwong Shin Optical on Sunday afternoon and the whole place was packed. Something must be going on at the GuangYin Temple nearby as there were many many people. Sim Lim Square and Burlington Square's respective car parks were also full too.

It was one of those days where one car goes in and the gantry says "Car Park Full". Wait a couple of minutes, some other car will exit from the car park before the next car in waiting is allowed to go in. Guess what? The gantry says "Car Park Full" again. Rinse, repeat.

So what that means is that when you get in, there is only ONE lot available in the entire car park for you and it's the one left by the previous outgoing car.

Question is, where the hell did that car park previously?

And so I wandered my way around the car park aimlessly looking for that ONE lot. Now this is in Bras Basah Complex which is a very old building. None of the fancy green/red light indicators above every lot to help you locate the empty lot easily.

It took me a while to find the lot before I proceeded to reverse into it.

"Hmm..... why today parking a bit more tricky ah? How come this pillar (on the car's left) position different from the rest of the pillars one?

Nabeh... this spot very tight leh....."

But I still managed to park it in.

When I got out and looked back at my car (I was pressing the remote control to lock it)...

"... EH? HOW COME MY PARKING LOT IN FRONT NO HAVE THE YELLOW LINES AND LOT NUMBER ONE????!!!"

Gotta love them small cars.

p.s. Kwong Shin Optical NOT opened on Sundays. *facepalm*

Toa Payoh Lorong 5

Though I didn't get to play tennis last Saturday due to work commitments, I nevertheless trooped down to join the rest of the gang at around 4pm when I was done with my work.

It was one of those times where it is too early for dinner but too late to start anything else.

And besides, at 4pm, the guys are probably dying of thirst and I thought why not just grab a few bottles of 100-Plus en route?

And so we were done with tennis for the day as they all headed upstairs to hit the showers. Thereafter, some of us venture out to tao-pao dinner back. Tennis Gal, if you still remember her from here and here, was with me with the buying of the food.

As we were standing around waiting for our food to be ready, my eyes started to wander and to soak in the rustic sights.

And when it's when I turned around when I saw this beautiful sight of 万家灯火.

Sunday Church II

It's a Sunday morning and I was headed to church.

When I got there, the ushers were gone and the doors were closed.

The church closed its doors on me.

God closed His doors on me.

Ok ok. So I was being melodramatic there. The truth is that we were late.

Again.

If you don't recall my peeve with being late for Church, read here.

I woke up at about 8.40am and Faith was still nua-ing in bed. We left her behind the Sunday before when she couldn't wake up. She freaked out about being abandoned eventhough Grandpa and Grandma were around. So I reminded her that I will not hesitate to ditch her again if she don't get her arse off the bed at that very instant.

Next came the f*ck thing where I got chided by the wife for talking to my kid in a threatening fashion.
HARLOW!!?? Like this call threatening? I call it stating matter of factly. Welcome to the world we call the harsh reality of society. People get left behind when they can't keep up. Yes, society do, from time to time, lend a hand to the unfortunate and pull them along. But if you are able-bodied and you are not keeping up, society is more than happy to see you rot in the dumpster and possibly drop a couple of rocks while you are down there.

So anyway, it was almost 10.30am by the time we got out the door. Do they expect me to get to Barker Road from Seng Kang is under 5 minutes? OK, so perhaps we don't need to get in before 10.30am. We usually get in before 10.45am where the Praises were still going on and the sermon has not started.

The standard modus operandi is that I will drop them off at the elevator before I go search for the parking spot. I dropped them off today at 10.50am and by the time I parked my car and walked to the Sanctuary, the ushers were gone and the doors were closed.

Granted that I could easily just open the door and enter, I ish already sian half with the whole idea of attending church.

I thought Sunday Church was supposed to be a happy event for the family to be together. Instead, why do I end up feeling so much resentment each time (which is rather often) we were late?

Seriously, I am contemplating giving up the idea of attending Church altogether as it is giving more grief than joy. It upsets me which in turn upsets the whole family. I think we'd all be happier if we can all sleep in together. Wake up so early for what?

Alternatively, perhaps I should just leave the car keys with the wife and let her drive and keep her own time. Then perhaps I can set off way earlier in the morning to explore the old kopitiams, markets and/or hawker centres* en route. Enjoy a good breakfast, good kopi-o gao with the morning papers AND still be on time?

Perhaps the family should only get together at noon time when we meet at the front door AFTER the service.

* Was at Lorong 5 Toa Payoh hawker centre. A quaint little forgotten place. Took a couple of pictures which I will post tomorrow.

Vandalin & ruok: Trust me, even if we move to a later service, we will still be late. It is not the timing of the service but the thoughtlessness of the people keeping time.

Sunflower: I was with friends lor. I am at Lor 1 for my weekly tennis everyday Saturday from 12 to 6 or when we run out of natural light.

It's funny that when I was driving past your place, I was pointing out to my friends that you lived there (pointing at your block).

tssd: I think the method that worked on Faith should work on the family. If Faith gets left behind for not keeping time, then perhaps the family gets left behind for not keeping time too?

Well kids will be kids.... why don't you just go to church separately so that you can avoid upsetting everyone.

Mistress Grace: Kids the real time keepers if you think about it.

Ǝ: Trust me, it's futile. It is not the timing of the service that is the problem. Even if we attend the 5pm service, we would probably arrive at 5:30 to 6pm.

Msvindicta: Mai tu liao!!

tssd: Perhaps I should go there on my own and leave the car keys with the family and meet them after the service.

I remember growing up and having screaming matches at my sisters to get out of the bathroom and basically, there was always mayhem every Sunday getting to church. It was very important for us to get to church early. And now, we still have the same problem, hubby and me. Especially after a late night out on Sat. But I guess, deep inside, we understand and realise that if God can sacrifice His Son for us, what's waking up early on Sunday to go to church compared to what He has done. And the attitude towards God is so important. I look it as, if I don't get to work late everyday, why then should I be late to meet God once a week? Is God less important than school, work, or anything for that matter? Where is God in my priority list.
Sorry for sounding so preachy.....Maybe you could explain to Faith and your wife, your views on this. Hubby and me had issues about going to church on time and its only after numerous discussions that he was able to see my view.

Yes, i think you should just go church on your own. Obviously your family don't share the same feeling of being to service on time and forcing them only get the situation ugly.
Take a step back and try going there on your own. You will probably feel more at peace with yourself. Anyway, i always feel that religion is about yourself. The family is more of a support. But if you cant even feel the strength to support yourself, how can the family do anything? Find back your faith, my dear :)

Mootq: I am beyond pissed until I don't feel anything left. My church friends were surprised to see me sitting outside. I just told them I didn't go in because I was late. I was surprised that I was so calm about it. Not angry, not pissed, not flustered. Perhaps sitting outside to cool my head was good in the end for me.

Chocolate Gal: For once, I actually agree 100% with what you said.

Giving up church altogether becos ur family is late? sounds like an excuse to run away from 1) teaching faith to have more er...faith and 2) communicating with your wife on raising kids.
Eventually if its not church, it will be something else. so dun miss church, man, that's not the issue.

happy new year! I think given that Faith is of an age where you can reason with her, you should explain how important it is to be on time - just like it's important for her to be on time for the school bus and then for school, and for you to be on time to get to work (or on time to get to airport to go on holiday etc).
if that doesn't work then next sunday, just get up and go to church and leave the family behind, but not with any vindictiveness though, otherwise, it's quite pointless to go to church with meanness in your heart.
or, find a church that's nearer to your house. Plenty of people move churches after they've moved house, get married etc. there's no harm at all in finding a new church that's nearer. it might actually build community spirit!
alternatively, you can work backwards from the time of service, and tell Faith to be up by say 9.30am to be ready to leave the house at 10. that way, she doesn't have to wake up as early as you do, and you can get ready her breakfast, her clothes, bag etc etc to get out of the house on time. that's what we do every morning. G may/not wake up the same time as us, so we get up first, get ourselves sorted (shower, clothes, food, bag packed), and then when it's time to go, if he's awake great, if not we move him straight to the car.
good luck.
good luck.

Jay,
Don't give up. I guess it can be hard with kid. Me no kids.....so can't say much on that. But I believe that if you persevere and continue to explain and be long winded, and pray about it. Someday, your kids and wife will come around. Have faith!

First Day Of Primary One

That's Faith looking spiffy in her spanking new pinafore, getting ready for her first day of Primary School.

She is now bottomless as I am typing coz Grandma decided that her pinafore needs some final touches and is busy sewing away.

Everybody in the house is scrambling to something related to Faith's first day.

Grandma, as I was saying, was re-sewing the name patch on the pinafore, which had earlier fallen off. Lousy iron-ons.

Faith, the bottomless, is sitting next to me grabbing an early lunch and watching me pound away at the keyboard with a picture of her on my laptop screen.

Wife is preparing her pink backpack school bag which is the same size as Faith's upper body which kinda made her look like a life-size ninja turtle. (Whole family facepalmed the first time she tried on the backpack.)

That, according to the wife, is only temporary as Faith should be able to outgrow the size of the bag by next year.

That is, assuming she haven't lost the bag sometime this year.

In 25 minutes time, we will put Faith up on her school bus and then we will drive over separately to meet her at school and check out her first day.

I will be heading for work thereafter while the wife will stayed on and wait for her to show up for recess.

Happy New Year 2009 (NSFW)

Lucky Bastard

The year 2009 was one where I ushered in via a rather unusual fashion.

I left my place at around 9+ supposedly to meet up with the rest of the gang before we all cab down to St James Power Station together. Unfortunately, due to someone who was "gone-ded" shortly after I arrived, we never made it beyond St Jeff's Power Living Room which I hereby christened it as the WiiSky Bar.

WiiSky Bar was lotsa fun with the loser downing a shot each time.

One thing I did learn...

Video Taken Offline At The Request Of The CB Sishtars.

... is that Alcohol + CharBor + Wii = Damaged Ear Drums Of A Blushing Pirate.

Allow me to introduce CowboyBar's very own Arcade Lian and Arcade Huay aka the CB Sishtars.

Lai lai, come and guess which one of the CB Sishtars below is the camwhore.

Video Taken Offline At The Request Of The CB Sishtars.

Pardon the quality as it was taken off my mobile phone which the ladies mistaken as a still camera, hence the lack of inhibition. Hur hur hur......

We also have 2 LongKang Fairy awards!

I wonder what if we hold another one of these Wii parties at one of their homes? Hmm.... *evil plan hatching*
So anyway, so much for the update here as I wish one and all a very Happy New 2009!

P.S. I am so going to die by the time the CB Sishtars find out about the video clips.
