Eggs Benedict

I love eggs in every way. From sunny-side up to over-easy to hard boiled. My favourite is a close toss up between kopi-tiam-half-boiled-egg-in-a-saucer and Eggs Benedict.

So imagine my delight on my first morning in Vegas when I spotted this in the cafe's menu.
"... poached eggs and ham on a English muffin, smothered with hollandaise sauce..."
My friend Kev, obviously rubbing off some of the enthusiasm from me, beat me to waiter, ordering the Eggs Benedict with absolutely no clue what it was.

Kev: I will order first.

Waiter: Very well, sir. What would you be having?

Kev: I would like the Eggs Benedict over-easy and I would like the change the muffin to croissant.

Waiter: -____________-"

A quick elbow nudge to his ribs quickly ensued as I whispered to the waiter to ignore him.

A silent nod of acknowledgment from the waiter and we continued with the ordering from the rest of the table.

I waited for our food to arrive before giving Kev his Eggs Benedict 101 introduction.

Moral of the story?

True wisdom comes from knowing what you know as well as knowing what you do not know.

poached eggs - http://www.hormel.com/templates/knowledge/knowledge.asp?catitemid=10&id=446

A poached egg cooked on the stovetop is one that is cooked in simmering water without the shell. Unlike a boiled or coddled egg that benefits from the use of an older egg, a poached egg is best when a very fresh egg is used. This is because the fresh egg, when placed into the heated water, will not spread out like an older egg, yielding better results with the shape and texture of the egg.

Link to wikipedia will tell you how eggs benedict is prepared. Then wikipedia will provide further links to how poached eggs is prepared and how hollandise sauce (the sauce that's placed on top of the eggs and muffin in eggs benedict) is prepared.

Eating Snake In Las Vegas

Normally, I would pencil in only 3 working days for any market that I attend. Apparently, for this Las Vegas market, my meetings spilled over into the 4th day but the problem is that it is only for a portion of the 4th day. With that, Kev and I just decided to ditch the market and head down to Caesars Palace Forum to jalan jalan for the rest of the afternoon as we took another friend to her favourite place, Louis Vuitton. Where else? =P

Ahh..... the only difference with the Louis Vuitton in Paris is that there isn't a super long queue of TiongKok Lang queuing outside waiting to get in.

I thought I heard someone asking for Gucci? Let me hear you scream!!!

Spotted this at the Exotic Car display where they have this F430 Spider. Yum!

It gets even better as we walk along to see this Lambourghini Murcielago V10.

Just when you thought you are seen the best, this one shows up in front of us. This is also another Lambourghini Murcielago but this is a V12 version and the paintwork is absolutely stunning.

This is the Bellagio that is supposedly the only 5-star Hotel in the Las Vegas Strip. Dunno about them but those hotels I stayed at like the present Paris Hotel to me, seemed pretty 5-starred. Strangely how it didn't get the certification. Perhaps Las Vegas operates on a higher benchmark? Judging from this, I think our 5 Stars would probably be around their 3 Stars standard.

New Found Stuff

Sorry for being missing for quite a number of days but I just didn't feel like spending USD 10.99 per day for internet access. Considering the fact that I am hardly in my hotel room for obvious reasons. Hur hur hur....

Anyway, I was at the gas station when I spotted this two products.

I spotted Marlboro Blue and Gold. I think Blue is Marlboro Mild but I am not sure about the Gold though. I do remember we have Marlboro Medium (red with white borders) back in the late 90s.

Remember Coke Blak? Well, they have that over here in the US too and in addition, there is Coke Zero. Coke Zero is like the new and improved version of the Coke Light (previously known as Diet Coke). Difference? 1 Calorie for the prior weighs in at a grand total of 1 Calorie while this new Coke Zero is 0 calorie as the name suggest?

So how was it? Coke Zero is more frothy and IMHO, tastes a lot better.

Head Up To Las Vegas

After spending the 3 days in Los Angeles clearing meetings and appointments, it's time to set off for Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Furniture Market. This time round, we decided to head up to Las Vegas by car.

En route, I found this place which I am sure Jaslyn will squeal with delight when she sees this.

We took the Mercedes Benz S65 AMG and pushed it to 240 km/h. Too bad, by the time I got out the camera, we came down to 210 km/h already as we had to slow down before we crash into the cars up front.

This is where the 600 horses are packed under the hood. It was a journey of about 190 miles or 305 km (roughly Singapore to KL). We could have cleared it under 3 hours if not for the fact that the traffic was pretty heavy and we spotted several Highway Patrol before they spotted us.

Er.... anyone knows how to pronounced this name on the street sign?

Ahh yes, the famous Death Valley, located in the equally famous Mojave Desert, at 86m below sea level, marks the lowest point in the USA.

Speaking of desert, we were under the scorching sun all the way and the outside temperature reads 47 degrees Celsius on our dashboard.

At about the 3/4 way mark, we saw a lightning storm up ahead and we drove in its direction.

As we drove right into the storm, the temperature plummeted to 23 degrees Celsius. A drop of 14 degrees in a matter of minutes! However, we drove through and passed the storm behind us, the temperature returned to the 40s.

The final stretch before we hit Las Vegas was straight all the way. Time Check: 3 hours exactly.

Passed by this curious looking hill with the black top amidst the light brown of the desert sand. Turns out that it was the shadow of the large cloud above.

Destination reached. Coke anyone?

More updates in days to come. Akan Datang. Stay tuned.

Mercedes Benz CL 500

Well folks, I am in Los Angeles again and borrowed another car to test drive while I am here. This time round, I got the Mercedes Benz 500 CL. It is easy to guess if the friend, who lent me the car, is male or female by looking carefully at the photos. Not going to tell you here. I'd rather you go seek out the clues and figure it out.

Compared the to previous Mercedes Benz S65 AMG, this pales in comparison by a big distance. Despite the 5,000 cc enging capacity, the power on this car is really no fight against the S65 AMG.

Initially, I thought I was spoiled by the S65 AMG and that every car that I drive from thereon after will always be under-powered. However, after driving this 500 CL all over the place for an entire day, I've come to the conclusion that this car is really under-powered with or without the influence from the S65 AMG experience.

Still, the consolation for this car is that this is still more chio than the S65 AMG as the latter is a wee too big for my liking.

Since young, I have had this mentality that the BMW is superior to the Mercedes Benz. To make matters worse, driving a Mercedes Benz like very "uncle" leh, while I am of the perception that it is more "happening" to be driving a Beemer. Well, I have to say that after test driving both the S65 AMG and the CL 500, I think I am changing my mindset to favour Mercedes Benz more. More especially so after the 2003 design disaster of the BMW 7-Series (see below and click to enlarge).

Happy Planet Index Ranking

I am sure a lot of your must have read about the Happiness Ranking where our dear old Singapore is ranked at a dismal 131th position out of a total of 178 countries. (Click picture to enlarge)

Now before anyone thinks that I am bashing the Gahmen again. I'm not. I just feel the need to explain the ranking from our own perspective.

If you look properly, you would realised that the top HPI ranked countries are those that are relatively poorer. However, does that mean that they are better off then us?

Let me give you an analogy. Just compare the kids of yesteryears and kids of today.

Last time when we were kids, we had so much fun flying paper kites that cost us 10 cents or marbles that come in 10 for the dime. Spiders and LongKang fishes are free.

Today we have kids who would brawled his/her eye sockets out just because he/she doesn't have a PSP or GBA. A toy that sets the parents back by several hundred dollars.

Now would you say that the kids of yesteryears were a better off bunch? No necessarily. There is this thing called Latent Demand.

We are less happy because we have more wants in this modern era and hence are having a more difficult time fulfilling each and everyone of them compared to the next person who lead a simpler life.

So anyway, here's a word out to the people not to be too worried about our relatively low ranking in the HPI, even though we have been pretty buay song with the Gahmen of late.

Chinese Idiom Of The Day.

Well, i guess we are getting more and more greedy. Plus, there are more expectations from the parents to the children, resulting in the children feeling more pressurized.
And in turn, this pressure is converted to the need for material items to destress for some. That's how some of the wants come about. :p

Singaporeans in general are materialistic. Always want MORE, BETTER, DIFFERENT. In an era of consumerism, there is no way to catch up with new product launches. Hence these pple feel their needs are unmet. For me, things are simple. Gimme a kopi, an occasional tiger beer with ice @ kopitiam, a once in a blue moon ciggy and having an old talk cock buddy (like Jay) .......... I'm contented.

hey. it's not just Singaporeans who are unhappy. and incidentally there has been some research that has pointed out that there's a certain threshold of money that most people will be happy with (i'm talking about ordinary people, not millionaires or vv rich/famous people). once that threshold is reached, most people will seek happiness in other things (family, friendship, hobbies etc). ie, once we reach a certain amount, more money will not make a person happier.conversely, if we have reached that threshold and still haven't felt fulfillment in other sectors, we won't be happy. perhaps that's why Singaporeans aren't such a happy bunch.

sunflower & Pam: I guess it all boils down to what is more important. Unfortunately, most people would put money as No.1. Lagi more unfortunately, sometimes, people are forced under circumstances to put money as No.1.

In other words, it is not the person seeking money problem but money problem seeking the person.

Dr Lee Baloney Yang

((( Click To Enlarge )))

Today is 19 July 2006 and it has been 16 days since mrbrown's article on Today Newspaper that got him booted out. What has the Gahmen done between now and then?

I am referring to Dr Lee's quote where the Gahmen is "duty bound" to the record straight....".

Let me ask you this. What has the Gahmen done since that article to "set the record straight"?

16 days already and we still don't see anything. Gahmen very busy hor? Either that or Gahmen feels that explaining policies is just a waste of time on us.

"Aiyah, you all won't understand one lah!"

Well, although the Gahmen did not explicitly said that, I can't help but feel that this is the type of lan cheow attitude we are getting from the Gahmen right now.

I am sure all would agree with me that all we have seen so far, is mrbrown getting shoo-ed away. Period.

By continuing to act blur, Gahmen probably hope that people will forget about this episode as time passes. Then Gahmen no need to do anything liao. Somehow the need for the Gahmen to provide accountability to its people is lost somewhere between oblivion and twilight zone.

Today is 19 July 2006 and it has been 16 days since mrbrown's article on Today Newspaper that got him booted out. What has the Gahmen done between now and then?

Ridzuan: Time dilutes everything into oblivion and the Gahmen is using exactly this to their advantage in the hope that people will forget about it eventually and thus letting them get away without the need to account to the people.

Gary: I read about this silent protest. I would have gone if I were in Singapore. Heck, I would even make and distribute brown ribbons that day.
But you know what? After a while, people are going to forget about this incident too.

Sunflower: Yes, you are absolutely right in this aspect. We, the citizens of Singapore, are not important as far as the Gahmen is concerned.

Wennie: This is what I am worried about, this "it is the ordinary folks", you realised how he is saying this as if he is not part of it? You see how he distanced himself from the "ordinary folks". It is the sad truth that the elitist Gahmen is losing touch with the people on the ground.

14 July 2006

Mandarin Boo Boo

Yesterday was Round 2 of Season 2006/2007 of my golf tournament. Since it was the new season, we were given shirts and stuff. This season's golf shirt is a bladdy disaster (see picture). Orange collar with stripe over a white background. The kick in the balls is that the tournament logo on the sleeve is PINK. Wah lan eh......

All participants are "strongly encouraged" to wear the tournament shirt on competition day. Given it was damn fugly, I flatly refused to wear it (which explains the plastic bag being intact).

However, not wanting to flout the rules of not wearing the tournament shirt, I showed up yesterday in a tournament shirt dated back to Season 2001/2002.

Besides, it wasn't 100% cotton (got polyester) which means that the fabric material would be damn lousy at absorbing sweat.

As I arrived at the check-in area, I was met with one of the organising committee member (OCM).

OCM: 怎么没有穿队服?

JayWalk: 不吸汗.

OCM: HAR??? 你怎么可以说这一种话来了呢? Blah blah blah blah.......

He must have gone on a tirade for a good minute and a half about me being ungrateful since the shirt was a sponsorship of goodwill from the team captain before I realised what the fuss was all about.

I pointed to his sweat-dripping chin

JayWalk: OI! 是 "不吸汗" 啦! 不是 "不稀罕" 啦!

OCM: OH!!! Paiseh paiseh......

JayWalk: Nin nah ma eh chao turtle*.......

* Had to scold that coz he Ta1wanese don't understand mah. Arh bor, lim peh confirm tio hoot one.

For those who are curious about how I fared? I came in at a dismal 46th out of 90+ participants. This in golfer's term is known as LOFT....

As for Michelle Wie, you are being too critical lah. She went down due to heat exhaustion and I know what it feels like to be playing in temperatures about 40 degrees Celsius. I just did last Thursday. Just my luck that it was the hottest day of the year to have a tournament.

On one hand, we ask why is she doing in a Men's tour (and replacing the spot of a rightful man golfer) when she has her own Ladies Tour? We also ask that if the women were to seek gender equality, then why didn't they allow men to sign up for the ladies tour?

The crux of this matter really isn't about equality among the sexes. More rather, it that women in men's tour would boost revenue.

It is solely a commercial justification and nothing more.

By silencing mrbrown, this is "engaging in honest, constructive dialogue"???

Don't the Gahmen realised that the more that pull this type of nonsense, the more they are pulling away from the people?

At Yahoo’s Message Board (local), there is one dude who write damn well on local politics. I like the way he sees things. His yahoo nick: Iamalsothere. Not sure if he is still active, I stop readin long time ago...

Gary: Well, the way I see it, this thing concerns the well being of Singapore and hence it concerns me.

Because I care and I do not like what I see, I speak out about my displeasure, even if it would fall on Gahmen's death ears. I just need to get this out of my system.

But voicing out here, it could echo the sentiments of other people who think alike and resonate to a higher level. On the flip side, it may attract opposing views that perhaps could offer a new insight to the matter. Perhaps, I was wrong to begin with and some kind soul could take the trouble to show me what is right instead. For all you know, the Gahmen was right all along but for now, I am not happy with what lies ahead of me.

Anna: How the heck did you get dragged into this?

Chocolate: Eh.... you machiam self-appointed Minister of Manpower is it?

KHW: Ok will go look for it, if it is still there.

Pop,
I guess wat I like abt his postins is: He have proven to me tat when one talk abt the local politics, one does not need to sound angry or being a whiner. His views are pretty sharper and he does give a fair perspective of things. Tats wat I find damn sexy abt him. But there again, tats abt 2003, donkey years back...Not sure if U can still find him around at YMB.

Gary: Your comment is so important that I felt that I need to address you individually.
I think you misunderstood me on certain areas and I would like to take this opportunity to clear the air a little bit.

Perhaps it was my fault if you are under the impression that I am against the Gahmen policies like raising prices and such.

Let me go on record that I think that it is justifiable to raise transport fares. Fuel prices have gone from from USD 35 a barrel a decade ago to breaching USD 70 a barrel in recent weeks. Now think about this, how much did you costs of living change as a result?

I am not against Gahmen policies. I think most, if not all, are justifiable. What pissed me off is the way, the Gahmen handles the people when introducing these policies.

Ok so mrbrown make noise about rising prices like electricity, kopi and transportation. He, like many other Singaporeans, is simply raising his hand to the Gahmen and asking why like that? What Gahmen could have done would be to explain to mrbrown and many other Singaporeans like him so as to make them understand the intentions of the new policies and the benefits that it would bring to the people.

This scenario sounds familiar? You are in school and you raised your hand to ask your teacher something. The question may appear very stupid and as a result you get chided by the teacher for wasting her time. Worse, you get punished for being a trouble-maker. The truth of that matter may be the fact that you seriously don't understand certain aspect of what the teacher was saying. Had you known the topic at hand a little better, you would be able to ask a "better" question? Have you not ever been through a situation where you were so confused that you don't even know what question to ask, let alone formulate a question that wasn't deemed "stupid"?

This my dear Gary, is the point I am driving at.

I am not against Gahmen policies. I am however, annoyed by the condescending manner in which we, the people of Singapore, are being treated by our Gahmen. The very Gahmen that we elect to serve us.

Dr Lee Boon Yang mentioned in a recent response (will blog about this next week) that "the Gahmen is "duty bound" to set the record straight". Let me ask you this, it is almost 2 weeks since mrbrown published the "offending" article. What has the Gahmen done thus far? Do you see any attempts at setting the "record straight"? Coming to 14 days already. Still nothing on any of the media. Gahmen very busy is it? All I have seen is mrbrown being booted out of his column.

You tell me, if I am wrong to be disappointed with the Gahmen in this aspect.

hmm.. so you are trying to tell me that we are confuse as to why the government have to resort to this kind of method to mr brown, as what you have scenario?? and as a result of this confusion, the government have yet to give the answer on silencing mrbrown.

i began to see your point with some gunpowder smell.

but mrbrown's article, the part where he use our head as a microchip and use it to pay for taking the lift, etc.. is a bit going too far.

i hope our exchange will not end in real argument.. lol..

KHW: Ahh... looks like your iTunes friend quite Beng hor? A bit like me. kekekekekeke......

Gary: The definition of "confuse" over here, refers to one being unclear because the Gahmen did a lousy job explaining the introduction of policies and going ahead to implement it.

Unlike HK, where their Gahmen make the effort to make TVCs and take out print ads to create awareness and educating the public, in language that is easily understood even by the less educated Ah Sooks and Ah Pors on the street. What has our Gahmen done besides making people who raised questions go away?

It's been 12 days since the Brown incident. As long as this comment thread continues, I shall keep counting.

As for Brown's jibe about pay for taking lift with microchip in the head, that is just him talking cock lah. At first glance, we know it is just a joke, but still, I would agree with you that mrbrown may be wrong here to assume that everybody recognised it as a cock joke.

There ARE people who would take it for real, unfortunately.

Come to think of it, I won't totally dismissed the part about the chip in the head. Research has been ongoing for years with regards to implanting chip in the human body and the 2 best places for the microchip is the right hand and the forehead.

Incidentally, there is also mention of this in the book of Revelations in the New Testament (Bible). Coincidence or prophecy? You decide.
