Name Series Part 5 - Tony

Tony owns a printing firm around the Commonwealth area and I got to know him when I went to him for a printing job. We'd only just set up the Nanyang Image Makers and we were about to publish the very first issue of the NaIMs Magazine.

I got more than I bargained for. On top of the magazines, I got a friendship that would last a lifetime.

Tony life started off on a humble note. Son of a single mother, whom at one time was so poverty stricken, had to place Tony in the custody of the Canossian Sisters.

Because of this, Tony has always been supportive of the Canossian Sisters and to this day have not asked for a single cent whenever their newsletter, flyers and brochures needed printing. On top of that, he has been an active supporter of their various ministries.

Tony did not have a formal education and to be where he is today, was purely hard work. He has worked from sailor to hotel chef to door-to-door sewing machine repairman to owner of a printing firm and a small insurance agency. He has done it all. Tony has come and long way and yet remain a humble man with a big cheerful belly. Respect.

One of Tony's talent is cooking. I remembered him calling me one day.

Tony: Eh, I cooking this weekend. Come over and bring all your friends. *hangs up*

The makan session was done in his front porch and he would bring the gas cylinder, gas stove and wok and he would cook on the spot for us while we all sat around in plastic chairs talking the evening away. Sedap!

At the end of the meal, he would hand out a plastic tub that used to be an ice-cream tub.

Ahh... time to pass the charity tub around. He was collecting money for the Canossian Sisters, which we all gave generously. One cannot imagine a simple and modest white, used ice-cream tub, could be filled with so much love.

I was no stranger to private charity work and as such, when I found out about RunForFunds project, it was like water to a fish.

Tony's kindness didn't stop there. Over the years, Tony, together with his son-in-law, have been collecting unsold bread from our local confectioners and distributed them to the homeless people in the vicinity of Desker Road and Johor Street. I am not sure about now, given that I have been away for so long, but I am sure till this day, they would still be doing it, come rain or shine.

Tony has one hobby that he does every weekend without fail. Taking his boat out to sea. It was him that encouraged me to get a boat license. That way he can drink all the beer he wants and dozed off under the warm afternoon sea breeze while I take the boat safely back to Punggol Marina.

I would say that Tony is probably the oldest friend that I have. He is a grandfather already.
Anyway, today is a short blog.

Thank you Tony. Thank you for teaching me to be a better person. Thank you.

p.s. As I was drafting this entry, it dawned on me that I should connect Tony and RunForFunds together. I think with similar goals, we can achieve more with this synergy.

Name Series Part 4 - Christopher

 Christopher I

I know Christopher since Sec 1. He was in NPCC while I was in St John and as all uniformed groups had their activities on Saturdays, it wasn't long before we came to know of each other's existence. Before you start to think that that would be the start of a beautiful friendship, it was not. It never happened. This bloke was one heck of a weird guy. Initially, as and when we passed each other in school, I would usually offer a friendly "Hi!". Strangely, what I got in return was this stare like as if I just murdered his parents and their bloods were still dripping off my chin. It wasn't long for me to start treating him as invisible.

Psycho.

I am sure that you would agree when I say that Singapore is a small place and certainly a place that does not require the 6 degrees (of separation) to get ourselves connected to one another on this little island. As it turned out, he was the "brother" of my first ex-gf and they knew each other since Sec 2.

I have nothing against Christopher but because of his psychotic animosity towards me, I've grown to dislike him too. That kinda put the ex-gf in a tight spot as she got caught between the two of us. So much so that she had to painstakingly make sure that we do not end up together at the same place at the same time.

Alas, there would be times where such arrangements would be impossible impossible like the holiday chat or the birthday party. Neither or us could be excluded nor staggered to appear at different times.

It was her 17th birthday and there was a birthday gathering at her place. The air of tension in the atmosphere spells "杀气" in bright neon colours and was blinking so incessantly bright that even a blind man would have been annoyed.

So there I was at her place helping out with the logistics wherever I can, and there he was sitting in one corner with his killer stare following me all over the house like a Star Wars Imperial Cruiser Tractor Beam. What was his problem?

Sheesh.

Being the bf, I was naturally going to be the last one to leave and I would be staying back with the cleaning up. I remembered the look on his face when he did the "final turnaround" before he walked out the front door. I must have killed his pet goldfish too.

Ex-gf and I broke up after the A-levels and we went our separate ways. She headed to NUS while I entered NS.

Fast Forward.

I met Fern during my NS days and you guys would know how it's like when people get to know each other for the first time. Name dropping would always be the classic ice-breaker in a conversation. The usual "Oh-you-from-xxx-then-you-must-know-yyy" opening will always be deployed to get the chat going.

Remembered I said earlier that Singapore is a small place? Well, Christopher was Fern's cousin.

Ouch.

So I related the ex-gf story to her about her cousin and she went, "Yah, he is like that one."

Sigh.

Well, I don't think Fern mentioned me to Christopher as I have not seen him since the last ex-gf.

Heng ah.

Anyway, the Fern entry ended with me breaking up with her.

Die.

I killed his folks, his pet goldfish and dumped his cousin.

Die.

Name Series Part 3 - Wendy

Wendy I

My apologies to all future Wendys for the last one that I've encountered was such a nightmare. She may not be the main reason I quit my Tuas job but she certainly was the trigger that kill the camel with the straw-broken back.

It all dates back to 1996. I started work in Tuas the very Monday after my last paper. I was in Corporate Comms and she was in Billing. Admittedly, she was one of the better looking gals in there but there was something about her that wasn't quite right. I was the new guy and well wishers have been dropping hints here and there warning me against her. I didn't pay much attention to all the whisperings nor her. We were in different business units and I was having too much fun doing my stuff and being really good at it. It wasn't often that we get to do what we love. I was creating. From corporate global website to newsletters to directories to marketing kits.

Anyway, it was obvious I was shining brightly when I was poached to head the Marketing department of another business unit. 3 months later, I added the Operations Department to my portfolio following the unfortunately passing of my predecessor. This is when I came into full contact with her professionally. That was when I finally get the opportunity to know her up close and personal (with much regret).

She is a real piece of work as I received numerous complaints against her for quarreling with the customers. It was a time when the Customer Services Manager went on maternity leave that I had to cover her department as well. So here's the awful thing. I have to take nasty phone calls from users (Customer Services) lodging formal complaints against her. After that, I have visit the customer's corporate head office (marketing - accounts management) for another dressing down. By right, she would have been fired right away but strangely each and every time she escaped unscathed.

Finally, it was all revealed to me. She was the mistress of my boss. The almighty GM whom I report directly to. The GM is somebody who I admired a lot. Armed with just a Primary 6 education, he worked his way from PSA coolie to warehouse forklift driver to GM with a nice company car to boot. My GM has always treated me like a younger brother and I am thankful for that till this very day.

Reluctantly, like many of my other colleagues before me, I too had to look the other way as a gesture of giving Tai Kor face.

I was thinking that if she put in more effort into her job (which to be honest is not bad), we would all be working together happily. Somehow her stuck-up attitude is like an extra piece of sandpaper. Unnecessary friction. Most of the time, I just put up with her while avoiding any kind of confrontation.

Fast forward to June 1999. I was tasked to head the Y2K compliance projects of the Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore offices. She was roped into my Singapore team and I had to spend even more time enduring her tantrums.

First, there was a lot of data to migrate to the next system. Second, we have a deadline to complete the project. Year 2000 wasn't going to wait for us to complete our migration. Third, I was heading 3 teams concurrently. Fourth, she was damn difficult to work with but I can't boot her out on account that she was my Tai Kor's woman.

It was sheer hell then. I was caught in the middle between my GM's kindness at the top and her insubordination at the bottom. I was so burnt out that I drafted my resignation letter and saved to my harddisk, waiting to be printed the moment my Y2K projects were completed.

Then the "incident" occurred. We have a pool of network printers but among them was a line printer that was capable of printing several hundreds of lines per minute. It was a very expensive printer and as such we only had one. Hence, the chance to use it is precious commodity as all of us had much to print.

It just so happened that fateful day where I sent a print job, by mistake to the line printer instead of a regular printer. It just so happened that fateful day that the errant print job of mine cut hers in the printing queue. She came storming into the printing room all ballistics. I apologised for my mistake and cleared the printer queue for her.

She continued on her tirade and finally crossed the line with the magic word.

BASTARD.

I could have sworn I heard a small "poof" at the back of my head. Must have been the blown fuse. I headed back to my PC and printed the letter. Signed it. Dropped on my GM's desk and took the rest of the day off.

I returned to the office the next day and was called into my GM's office with her sitting on one of the chairs ready to apologise.

Apology not accepted as I handed in my leave form. I was out of there in a week.

Years later, I bumped into her at Mohd Sultan. It was her birthday or so I was told by my ex-colleagues who were there to celebrate. Expecting me to wish her a happy birthday, I instead, just gave her a cold stare that would bore 2 holes right through the back of her head and return Earth back to the ice-age. I turned around and walk away laughing. It was a good night.

Admittedly, she was one of the better looking gals in there but there was something about her that wasn't quite right.

Then I realised what's wrong. She was fugly on the inside.

Also,....
.... her perfume stinks.

are there stories of gals who, because they are beautiful inside, look beautiful to you over time? it would seem that most men do take the face value first, then start eroding a female character based on personality, like this one....

So...have you met any gal who impressed upon you just by having beautiful heart lungs and kidneys? what's her/their names?

Name Series Part 2 - Raymond

My apologies to all future Raymonds for I have very bad experiences with Raymonds.

Raymond I
Raymond crossed my path at Sec 4. It was a time we were embroiled in a love triangle. It was a story between a SCGS Girl, a RI boy and an ACS boy. Already school rivals in everything, there we were rivals in love.

Initially, he had the upper hand in the race for her heart but a fight to the final wire saw me triumphed at the end. Ironically, it was his badmouthing of me that pushed her away to me. She didn't like what she saw in his character. His insecurity took away too many brownie points resulting in his own rejection. Karma, I'd say.

Raymond II
So I've got the girl at the end of the day. After Sec 4, she went to NJC while I remained faithful to my alma matta and went on to ACJC. She then has a classmate and you guessed it, Raymond. Because of the fact that we were in different JCs, we only meet up on Wednesdays (short day of the week) and weekends. Raymond and her hanged out in school quite a lot, being classmates and all. What I later found out from her best friend that Raymond was trying to wedge himself between us. Raymond was interested in her right on the first day of JC. Too bad for him, we were together even before that.

She and I have had our quarrels and squabbles from time to time and for some reason, Raymond was always the person she would turn to for comfort and a listening ear.
We broke up at the end of JC 2 but they never did get together after that either.

Raymond III
I was in the army serving my National Service when I received a page on my beeper. It was her. Granted we may have broken up, we nevertheless still maintained contact. Well, it was quite a while since we last talked and during that update, I found out that there was a new man in her life. Sigh.... Raymond.

Again.

Apparently, Raymond was due to be posted to my camp and was asking me to take "special care" of him. It just so happened that great powers is bestowed upon those who has achieved Super Old Bird status in the camp. Me.

Raymond, another RI boy. Lives near my place and drove a Mazda Miata. Through my network within the camp, I discovered the Raymond was a medic and was due to arrive at the medical centre later that week. Honouring my promise to my ex, I made special arrangements to ensure his posting in was a smooth one. We met on his first day. We shook hands. We never saw each other again.

Raymond IV
It wasn't until towards the end of my freshman year in NTU before my heart opened again for another relationship. Serious one, that is. She was from accountancy and I knew I had a rival vying for her heart too. What I didn't realised until much later was that this bugger was none other than Raymond II. Small world! We fought over a girl back in JC and now as if history has turned a full cycle, we were fighting over another girl again. However, as history would have repeated itself, I got the girl. Jay 2, Raymond 0.

Weirdly, it was like watching a movie re-run over and over again. Being classmates, they hanged out quite often. Her best friend alerted me of Raymond trying to make a move on her. Raymond again offered the shoulder to cry on whenever there was a squabble.

Again, he never got her after we broke up.

Name Series Part 1 - Angela

Tracking Back
As promised, it's time to write my story about Angela. However, as I was writing about her, I was inspired to turn it into yet another series. Without further ado, Here's this week's Name Series.

Foreword
We meet new people every day and we often than not, form a initial impression of the person at the very first introduction. As people often have same names, we unwittingly tend to group them in the same category based on this very simple association. Based on our own past experiences, a certain name may tag along with it, a positive or negative connotation.

Angela I
Angela and Angela appeared in my life at different stages. Sec 3 and when I was working in Tuas.

For those who have not be following my blog for long, I was an active member in the St John Ambulance Brigade during my school days not only in my own school but in several other schools as instructors. Angela was from First Toa Payoh Secondary School and was a cadet where I was teaching. I guess owing to the fact that I was just a year older, it is very easy to get along with my cadets as we are of the same age. However, to keep things strictly professional between instructors and cadets, there was a no-fraternising policy in place. Alas, this line of separation is often blurred. Blame it on raging teenage hormones.
It was just a matter of days after my first appearance before my phone number gets leaked out and circulated. Before you know it, I was getting phone calls day in and day out. I've always enjoyed a good chat from time to time but limit it at that before incurring the wrath of the school principal and the adult officers-in-charge.

One night, the phone rang. I picked up the phone and there was a very low voice on the other end, whom I initially thought was a man and probably looking for my dad since the person sounded quite old from the low voice.

Jay: Hello?
Angela: *in her bladdy low voice* 猜猜我是谁?
Jay: *screaming silently* Wah lan eh!! Du tio kwee ah!!

I slammed the phone accidentally but partly also iTioChuah.

Minutes later, the phone rang again as it was Angela again whom she identified herself the second time round. She apologised for calling out of the blue and I apologised for the panic slamming of the phone. Anyway, the phone conversation lasted 5 minutes as I was studying and she never called again.

Angela II
Ahh yes, we've come to Angela of the mid-90s. The highlight of this entry. She was a colleague in Tuas where I work and the best way to describe her would probably be "Weird Weird 的". She was in the accounts department where I was running the marketing, sales and operations departments.

The bad news is that she has this MEGA crush on my Ops Manager.
The good news is that she has this MEGA crush on my Ops Manager.

Heng ah. Mm si wa. Bor wa eh tai chee.

Angela was this stocky girl about 1.7m with a hunch. Thick glasses with a slight underbite and no neck. The type where you point to the sky and she would have to bend backwards in order to look up. Ok Ok..... so I exaggerate a little but ask any ACS boy about Mrs Wan (Frankenstein Woman) and they will know what I am talking about.

Anyway, below was a conversation between my Ops Manager and her, that floored us.

Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Eh Angie, you last one to leave the office yesterday hor?
Angela: Yah.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Eh, you forgot to switch off the lights before you leave. How many times must I tell you to switch off the lights if you are the last one to leave.
Angela: *silence*
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: *sarcastic* You at night sleep with all the lights turned on one is it?
Angela: Yah.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: *speechless*

Because we knew that she was a bit "funny funny", we could tell, from that last response, if she was telling a matter of fact. To further illustrate her "weirdness", we had a visit from her parents in the office one day looking for her. Their daughter didn't return home the night before and apparently it was a frequent occurrence. We were told that she often just disappear for days and reappear out from nowhere.

She stayed with the company for close to 3 years before she tendered her resignation.

Rumour has it that her secret affair with our IT Manager soured. Nonetheless, she still maintained the Mega Crush on my Ops Manager.

So it was her last day of work and she went around bidding farewell to everyone in the office. She deliberately saved the last stop for my Ops Manager who occupies the cubicle next to mine.

Angela: Ah Phua.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Yah?
Angela: Today my last day leh. I just want to say goodbye.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Orh. Ok. Good luck hor.
Angela: Yah. Thanks. You take care hor.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Thanks. I will.
Angela: Ah Phua.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Yah?
Angela: 你会想我吗?

Next thing before anyone knows it, there was coffee spurted all over the PC, the monitor, the printer, the desk and the Ops Manager's shirt was all wet.

I had to sprint to the toilet before my head explodes from trying to contain my laughter.

So to all the future Angelas that I will meet. My apologies up front.
