Another Day, Another Run

Another morning bright and early as I head down to the jogging track again. Still haven't quite acclimatise to the local heat yet. :(

Had a heaving  heavy kopi session with OneLittleTwit the night before and then set up to run early next morning, forgetting to get some water into the system. Good thing it was just a short run or I could gotten into dehydration trouble.

Wasn't feeling 100% so decided to take an easier pace, only to realise that I get more tired trying to deliberately slow down my running. In the end, I gave up and just resumed my natural "wheezing-gazelle" pace.

Class 95 was much better with more music and less talking.

Bird Park 2006

Golly! I haven't step into the Jurong Bird Park since I was a kid! It was great bringing the kids and share with them the joys of my childhood memories. I am quite impressed with the Penguin enclosure which was a great leap forward since the days when I was a kid. I dare say it is ever better than the Aquarium in New Orleans shortly before it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Chens and the Hans were having a great time soaking up the sun. The 2 fathers were making corny jokes about the Lory Park (Eh... then where is the park where they have the pick-up trucks, SUVs and MPV har? *facepalm*).

We had fun taking pictures. More of the kids than the birds. I think kids more interesting. Hur hur hur.....

Hah, the last time i went remotely somewhere near there was because one guy wanted to go to the reptile farm despite my objections and when we did indeed go into the reptile farm, instead of the 2500 species of crocodiles we were expecting to find, we saw no more than 40 sleepy crocodiles.

Sunrise At Home

Woke up quite early in the morning and decided that it was the perfect weather to go for a morning run, after looking out the window.

The first half of the run was comfortable with a light breeze over cool temperatures. Then the sun started coming up and I was slowly feeling the heat. Towards the final kilometer, I saw a chio bu up ahead and I used her as my target to overtake before the end point.

Boy, can she run!!! I was cutting her lead slowly and steadily as I picked up my pace and it wasn't until the last 400m before I caught up with her and passed her like a gazelle cutting through the morning draft. What she didn't see was the guy underneath the gazelle panting and wheezing like his heart was about to explode. Must 保持形象 mah!!! Hahahahaha!!!

Anyway, the run was over before I knew it and I learned a few things that morning.

1) I can't read sms and run at the same time. So I can't reply either.

2) Morning radio sucks! They talked too much. What happened to the music?? I am bringing my MP3 player next time.

3) Treadmill is easier that running on real ground. Some more got aircon one.

4) I wilt under Singapore heat.

Worst Date Ever Meme

Got tagged by Vanna to do this meme but it really got me stumped. I don't think I ever had a bad date before.

I means seriously, if this person is someone that you don't think you are going to have fun with, then why are you still doing going on a date with her? For me, I'd probably like to get to know this person better first before asking that somebody out.

Perhaps the only time that one would get caught in a bad date situation is when he/she goes on a blind date? Well, in my case, I never had one. Never needed one actually.

Now thinking back, if I were to die die pick one, that it would have be the one with the Maddie back in what? 1994?

It was a dinner-and-movie date where I pick her up from her place and we headed for dinner in the Thomson area. We decided to leave the 320SL at home and take my car instead. The dinner was ok, the company was pretty good. Then it was time to head to the movies at Yishun 10.

We were chatting and driving on our way up when we reach a traffic light at around Upper Thomson Secondary School. We were behind a blue Proton when the light turned yellow.

The bugger in front slammed on the brakes. WTF!!!!??? Needless to say, that we were a bit too close for comfort and we slammed into the Proton's back. What better timing then to have a police car pull alongside at the very same time.

When the light turned green the three cars pulled over and the police asked if we wanted to settle this privately given that there were no casualties. Thinking that damage was minor and there was no need to alarm our respective insurance companies (thereby killing ourselves with a insurance premium hike the next year), we waved the good policemen on.

We got out of our cars and assessed each other's damage. The Proton's boot was slightly dented while my front was totally crumpled. In retrospect, it wasn't all that serious as the Honda Civic Esi front is meant to be a crumple zone i.e. to absorb as much of the impact as possible. As ugly and terrible my car my looked, an inspection under bonnet showed that my engine block, radiator escaped unscathed. All thanks to the crumple-zone bumper that made the ultimate sacrifice.

We exchanged details and went on our way. I drove on to Yishun to catch the movie despite a LOT of people staring at our car all the way there and back. Haiz.

The consolation was that the movie was good. However, I was almost $1000 poorer as a result.

Position Available: Security Guard Dog

This scruffy little dog showed up at our factory just a couple of days ago. A quiet and well-behaved dog that just wandered into the factory. The unusual thing about it is that it headed straight for my security guard house and sat there as if to assume its guard dog position. It doesn't bark nor growl at our guys. I think the dog knows that the workers are part of the factory.

There is definitely something special about this dog and the timing is impeccable. What better way to welcome the Year of the Dog by welcoming this dog into our factory?

While I would like to take this as an auspicious sign, I was mercilessly scoffed at by hitomi for being pang tang.

Well, be it mere coincidence or divine interpretation, we are keeping this dog.

ZheBin: Yeah. The security team is taking turns tending to the puppy.

Pam and Jaslyn: I remember some of the older cars have a plug that you can pull out of the front to connect to the wall power outlet to keep the battery warm and prevent it from getting frozen.

Heather: Will do that when we get back from our vacation. Besides, the vets are all closed for the CNY anyway.

Akk: Sorry to disappoint you but no Pedigree or Pal dog food for the pup. Not in Ch1na anyway.

Your Travel Type

Spotted this little quiz from Heatherina and as many are aware, I travel a lot and it is only natural that I find myself unwittingly following the link and started clicking here and there.

Here are my results and I must say ok lah. Not entirely correct lah since I do enjoy visiting museums and galleries, but quite zhun as far as the nursing hangover part is concerned. =P

Your travel type: Party Animal

The Party Animal always wears sunglasses during his vacation. He likes a good hotel, with a swimming pool and room service. A couple of drinks at night, maybe see a show, maybe roll the dice, that's the way to spend the evening.
Culture? A museum? The others can go while the Party Animal stays in bed. You'll find him by the side of the pool when you get back with a martini to get rid of the hangover.

Nurse With 180 Patients

I read about an article, on the $traits Times last Wednesday (18 Jan 2006), about a certain Nurse Grace Leong who negligently prescribed medicine to a patient, whom the latter was allergic to, and causing the death of the patient. Before I could blog my response to this case, somebody beat me to it with a letter to the $T Forum (See Below).

It is indeed unfortunately that some one died as a result of her negligence. However, one must note that this is a nurse who had to handle 180 patients by herself. What was the management thinking?? Surely anybody with a pinch of common sense would tell you that something is very wrong assigning 180 patients to a single nurse.

Under the circumstances, one cannot help but offer Ms Grace Leong some sympathy. It was definitely not about the money for no nurse would accept such an ardous assignment, if the motivation was purely monetary.

Here we have the possibility of striking her off the nursing registry. Just great! As if we don't have a shortage of nurses already. Granted that a life was lost in the process but surely there must be a better solution. Grace Leong has a set of skills that would contribute greatly to society. Patient Care Giving. It seemed like a waste to just throw it away like that.

I don't mean to belittle the unfortunately death of the patient. I don't mean it that way but I am sure some one out there who totally don't get my point and would point the finger at me accusingly and ask how much was the dead patient's life worth?

My answer is simple. About the same as Grace Leong's.

Striking Grace Leong off the nursing registrar is as good as taking away her livelihood. We already lost a life. Do we need to take another?

Is there another way out of this?

p.s. I am not sure if getting struck off is like having your driver's license revoked i.e. you can get it back if you start over. I hope it would be the case. Can someone verify this? Cinthia? Benjamin?

Nurse with 180 patients: System needs fixing too

I WAS shocked to read that a single nurse could be made to look after 180 patients, especially in a First World nation such as Singapore ('Nurse found negligent but coroner praises her'; ST, Jan 18).

It is hard to imagine how any human being - however competent or diligent - could provide the expected standard of care.

To put the issue in perspective, school students are generally healthier than elderly inmates, yet no school would leave just one teacher in charge of the welfare and safety of 180 students.

While the coroner may have found negligence in the administration of a drug which the patient was allergic to, it is harsh that nurse Grace Leong now faces the prospect of being struck off, while the welfare home has presumably escaped sanction and will continue to operate.

It is true that nurses - while human and thus fallible - owe a duty of care to their patients. Yet care is not provided by individuals alone, but by organisations and the systems set up therein.

When accidents occur, it is crucial to look not just at the individuals involved in making the error but also the system and organisation which permitted such errors to happen.
If there was negligence, we should also look at how a system was set up which placed Madam Leong under such inhuman working conditions.

When workers are overloaded and stretched to the point of exhaustion, the shocking thing is not that such errors occurred - it is that such errors did not occur with greater frequency.

The system of management in hospitals is sorely abused. I believed that the culprit is actually inertia and the unwillingness to make things better in a working environment, esp as with this type of skilled labour, there is little occurrence of accidents, this meaning that the workers are trained to be extremely meticulous becos it concerns human lives. Thus banking on this trait in this industry, docs and nurses are worked to the bone with lousy shifts and bad hours. Hospitals should wake up now and understand that these professionals are also human beings with their own lives to live.

5. JayWalk left...

Jaschocolate: The cold hard truth is that everything is driven by bottom line even at the expense of risking people's lives.

Akk: I believe leaving Nurse Grace Leong to solely shoulder the entire blame is wrong. The hospital is just as guilty, if not more.

Sigh, it's always easy to judge and point fingers. I wonder for how long she has been handling this gross amount of patients. I feel 179 patients would be grateful to her all the while she was taking care of them. 180 is really ridiculous. Like, if I open 180 windows with different tasks for the management to do right now, will they be able to? I can't even chat in 10 MSN windows.
And I think AKK has a point. Moreover I think they are like teachers - without the passion for the profession, one simply cannot last long in the industry. And nobody should ever take advantage of that.

180 patients in a typical 8 hour day means the nurse spends about 2.66 min per person per day, assuming equal attention is paid to everyone... However, we all know that some patients will require more care than others, plus the added burden of undoubted admin... so my guess is most of the patients receive perhaps just a few tens of SECONDS of attention from the nurse throughout the course of a day. That is atrocious, even animals in the zoo are treated better! IMHO, this was a tragedy in waiting because of the system, not in spite of it...

Vandice: Yes indeed it was a time bomb waiting to go off. The ironic thing is that :
1) They create the time bomb to blow themselves up.
2) The time bomb was obviously sitting there for some time, yet nobody did anything about it.

How about all the patients whom Grace saved/nursed? Doesn't that count? People always focus on the negative's and not the positive's.
I might be a bit biased, 'cos my sis used to be a nurse (ER one somemore), so I know how much they go thro'. Esp during the SARS, one moment, people avoided them like plague, the next they are called heros, can people make up their minds?!?!?!

Sian XMM Episode II

Jap Gal and I were talking about the funny misadventure of PJ  when it reminded me of another sian XMM episode, many years back.

Below is an extract of my conversation with Jap Gal that tells the story. I have taken the liberty of editing the conversation a little bit, for the benefit of the rest, in the attempt to tell a clearer story.

Enjoy the story.

So the showcase stand is this TV which has the Philips CDi console below... So I told her, that this CDi thing very fun one and the TV is touch screen interactive one... (when in actual fact, it is not. it is just an ordinary tv set).

Jap Gal:

JayWalk:
Then I told her to go ahead and give it a try i.e. go touch the screen and see what happen.

Jap Gal:

JayWalk:
She walked ahead while I walked away quickly in the opp direction.

Jap Gal:

JayWalk:

JayWalk's Booking Time Sheet III

Usually the booking time sheet would have appeared much earlier but this time round, I have been so busy that I haven't got time to sit down properly and map out my schedule until now.

I was just lamenting to a few friends that although I am merely a few days away (according to the calendar), I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel from where I am currently standing.

I can't even take "advanced booking" due to the fact that my folks are back with me during this trip. Babysitting them supersedes all others. :(

Still, I am toying with the idea of a "Pre-Morning" slot as my running shoes will be coming back with me this trip. Ulu Pandan Canal run anyone?

Finally, at the request of Jaschocolate, I have changed my password to a new one. Leave me an email or IM or SMS to ask for the new password. The main purpose of the password is not to shut people out. I just need to know who is coming in. That's all.

Free feel to come in and browse even if you are miles and miles away.

So without ado, Click here to goto JayWalk's Booking Time Sheet III (that is, after you have gotten the new password).
