Girl Molested - My View

If I may quote from Forrest Gump, "Stupid Is As Stupid Does."

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that the girl deserved to be molested but she certainly was doing everything to NOT prevent it.

Here are some of my thoughts.

1) You asked a guy to go on a trip alone with you, then share the same room. What kind of signals were you sending to the guy?

So what if you asked for a twin room? All you need is a room to have sex. The bed was never a relevant element in this equation. Who says you can't have sex on a twin bed?

Ok, so you say, there was no twin room available. You can always insist that the guy get his own room. Why the need to have to pay for his room too? If the guy is too cheap to get a separate room, then he can jolly well sleep in the lobby or something. Don't accept crap excuses like he does not have money to get his own room. No money? Then fly to Seoul for what? If cash is so tight, wouldn't it be better to just save the air ticket money and not fly?

Yes, it was your fault to drop the ball as far as accommodation arrangements are concerned and somewhat you felt responsible since it was also you invited him along. But if this guy is any gentleman, he would have gladly offered to cough up the dough for his own room. If he is not the gentleman sort, please re-read the previous paragraph pertaining to guys who are too cheap.

2) Come on, Sister. It wasn't as bad as it seems lah. There was just fingers stroking your back and a boner pressed against your ass through the fabric. No much damage done, right?

Initially, you didn't react, what kind of signal were you sending to him then? Didn't he stop when you got up?

3) Putting up all his details was totally uncalled for. If you think by doing that, you can shame him, then think again. It only showed us that you overreacted and that we felt that your blog entry made you look ridiculous.

There is a reason why the police on both sides did nothing. That's because there was nothing to be done in the first place. Trust me and save your money on the attorneys. I think you will suffer more when the lawyers happily take away your money.

4) You. Yes you. Stop being a baby and quit whining. It was a total misunderstanding. I would have taken your side had the guy continue to molest you after you got out of bed but he didn't, did he? So why the need to stone him at the stake?

Let she with no part of the blame, cast the first stone!

I am not saying that this is entirely your fault but only that the fault originated from you. So you fell off the horse. Please pick yourself up, dust yourself, get back unto the saddle and carry on your journey.

You are an a big girl liao. You can do it.

I m with you on this one. She is stoopid..
She failed to stop him when he stroked her back, he took it as a "come on, tiger" and promptly reacted with a boner.

She doesnt have a case, she flew a thousand miles to Seoul with him, checked into the same room with him and shared the same blanket and bed, its simply her word against his word.
Probably she wanted something else more from him and he dint succumb and hence the cry foul case.
Besides, apart from touching her back and rubbing against her, the guy did nothing.. hard to believe...

I agree that she is practically wrong in this case, as she didn't take care of herself and prepared the possibility that this may happen. No man is a saint.. they will try to get into your pants faster than you snapping your fingers if you didn't stop it. She should have like ask him to sleep on the floor or something and he would has got the point.

But as a gal, i know the sick feeling of being "touched" unwillingly so i do pity her too.. No one like to live with those fear, which is why she wanted something to be done...
Guess i will need to be neutral for this, okie?

Chocolate Gal: Yah, your arguments points towards a neutral stance. Asking a guy to sleep on the floor is too much lah. Invite people to fly thousands of miles just to sleep on the floor buay gum lah. She should have 1) lay down the no-entry ground rules from day 01 or 2) ask the guy to get his own room but due to the fact that it was her cock up (no pun intended) to begin with, offer to subsidise part of his hotel room, to which the guy should be gentleman enough to decline the kind offer.

Like that then everything swee swee liao right?

urr... it's not totally a matter of his/her words in law liao in assault and battery. there's technical formula they need to prove and as long as they satisfy, no need to have witnesses or evidence.
if im not wrong, the absence of "privilege" to touch a person in a certain way is enuf to prove the dude is in the wrong. since he's not even close to her, and they never had intercourse b4 and she didn't do anything ACTIVELY approving of the act, hes ald in the wrong.

it's not the plaintiff's onus to prove that he did touch her.it's the defendant's onus to prove that he got the plaintiff's consent.and no, sleeping on the same bed is not enuf to be consent however weird and "possibly inviting". consent has to be clear even to the layman.

2) She cannot complain about being groped because she did not send out the correct signals and let's face it, we are all adults, who are we kidding.
3 and 4) I agree its uncalled for and seriously, unless she has deep pockets, the amount of moolah that goes towards pursuing a civil suit against him is simply filling the coffers of the law firm she engage who will not give a f87k whether she wins or lose the civil suit.
Conclusion, no point crying over spilled milk, grow up and move on.

I feel that she don't really know this guy very well, maybe she knows him superficially like those, "Hi, Bye." type within their group of friends but not really well like if he is attached or where he is actually working in. It is like some guesswork was involved and she is throwing out clues for people to match to the guy.

Of all the friends she had, she cant find a single girlfriend to go with her, I am ok with that but she can always ask her cousins or some other female relatives or even her mother... unless she is telling us that even her mother don't want a paid holiday from her daughter?? What about her siblings?? Single child? I cant comment on that... but i think i would approach my family members if I need to find someone to accompany me overseas.

A guy even if he is very nice, as she say that he is, as a girl, she should be more cautious and protect herself better. She claim that the hotel had mixed up the reservations and there are no more suites after her first day but I believe if she really wants to, she can always get the hotel to help her to book another suite at another hotel. If worse comes to worse, downgrade to budget hotels as she said that she don't have the funds to get 2 rooms. Seoul do have budget hotels, don't they? She did received some form of compensation, even though it is not a lot, cant she use a little to get herself 2 rooms? she was saying at US$60 a day, she don't have the budget to book 2 rooms? can you get a suite at US$60 a day?

As for the bed part, I don't know if she had got those rooms with 2 single beds or if it is a room with a queen size bed but I got the impression that they are sharing a bed. Casual friends don't share beds, if they really need to, I think she should have stated right from the start that she don't intend to start a relationship with that guy. I think John will not start anything funny if she had stated ground rules right from the start.

All in all, she may have given John indications that she may be open to something in future? A relationship perhaps? Perhaps John had misread her friendliness as being open and wont mind starting a relationship with him? There are a lot of uncertainties when I read the post but as she is the writer, everything is from her point of view which makes it hard for us to give a fair opinion if she is really molested.

Mistress Grace: Indeed it's the truth! :P

Jeni: Welcome to the blog. I think you got a number of facts wrong. 1) They didn't get a suite. They originally wanted a twin-sharing room i.e. 1 regular room with 2 twin beds, usually separated by a night stand in between.

2) At USD 60 a night, I think that is budget hotel liao, given then the girl is unlikely to venture into hotels outside of the capital city. But seriously, USD 60 a night is damn cheap already. Obviously, this girl doesn't travel much and as such is pretty oblivious to the various market prices outside of Singapore?

So anyway, if the hotel is the one who screw up the reservations, they are under obligation to get it right even if it means moving your business to a competitor hotel and that includes the cab fare to get there. As for matching hotel prices at the new place, it is probably on a case by case basis and a dash of your own negotiating skills. However, difference will not be significant as transfer of hotel would probably be within the same price category.

She just updated on her blog again as she blames herself for the whole mess, calling her a bitch, whore and all sorts of other name.

Man... we have a drama queen here.

So it was a mistake resulting for a case of mixed signals. Is there really a night to put up such a big tragic drama for the world-at-large? Talk about undergoing surgery for a broken nail. Geez.....

Correct me if I am wrong, especially for those in the hotel line. There is no such thing as a twin bed suite. All suites are 1 x King size beds. Not even Queen size if they can help it.

Same bed, don't mean you can touch. Same way, silence does not mean consent.
Admittedly the chick didn't do everything to prevent the situation from happening, I'd plead innocence. Hindsight, frankly, is 20-20. A lot of coulda, shoulda, wouldas can be given AFTER the incident. On the spot play, I'd say all your planning can go out the window.
Now this LAST one I can't fucking stand. Justifying by "I got my needs?" Fuck off. I got my needs too and that don't give me the right to jump the bones of any hot chick that doesn't say no right?

Vandalin, yeah I agree with you. However, he did stroke her back which she did not complain cos she mentioned she didn't know what to do. She could have said no. IN this case, she was sending a signal that she was comfortable with him doing that. Its all a case of wrong signals being sent. So..she has to be blamed in some ways. In addition, lets give John some credit, he could have pushed his limits but he backed off. If he tried forcing himself on her then ok he is should be burned on the stake but he didn't.

now this i gotta say is totally on the fault of the guy. justifying the misunderstanding probably made it a lot worse. and saying "i've got my needs", that's utter and complete BS.

It's like an abusive bf going "you made me angry. now why did you go and do that for? making me hit you?" and just cos he backed off and didn't kill his gf does not make him the model of gentlemanliness or restraint.
Mistress Grace: Consider this the case of the "deer in the headlight" syndrome. had a friend who's a brown belt in karate who was in the lift with a guy who was staring and wanking off. mind went blank. only thing she could do was get out the instant the lift door opened.

I do have to clarify the label "stupid". It was not meant in a put down way but rather a why-didn't-give-it-more-thought way. So hope that clears the air somewhat.

Anyway, I would like to paste my response to this friend here as my final and closing comment to this matter. I do concede that my initial entry was not the most articulate but I slowly fine tuned my views after all the invaluable discussions with everybody here.

So here goes:

+++++

Hi,

I believe the consensus is that there was a misunderstanding between the two of them and that signals was wrongly sent.

Jean is naive. Yes. "f**king, bitchy, slutty, whining whore"? Definitely not. I think she was being too hard on herself as far as the subsequent post was concerned.

Yes, she made a mistake and was touched inappropriately as a result. Sorry to hear that.

What we disagree is that the guy was being portrayed as the absolute villain. Don't the guy deserve some credit for stopping when she FINALLY made it clear that she doesn't want intimacy?

Had she been unluckier and encountered a bad guy instead, she would have been raped.

I guess, we just sought to seek some redress for the poor guy who too is a victim here as well as a result of the post, considering that fact that he wasn't given a chance to defend himself on her blog.

Then again, to be fair to Jean, we are basing our conclusion only on her account of what happened. We didn't get a chance to hear his side of the story or if Jean has watered down her version on account of not wanting further embarrassment or even humiliation.

Still, whatever happened has happened and we only wish for Jean to be strong and move on with her life rather then being hung up over what we feel (not necessarily what she feels) is a trivia matter.

Perhaps, we need friends like you to be around her to give her moral support at this time.

We wish her all the best.

Jay

the blog entry was unfair, given the way she described it, a corollary would be that it was a misunderstanding. posting all his details was uncalled for and malicious. in jay's words, the punishment did not fit the crime. i agree. defending the guy was only to show that the big fuss she kicked up was unwarranted.

Shen2hen FuY0ng Ferry Terminal

I was doing housekeeping of my digicam's memory card when I chanced upon this picture that I have taken back in January 2008.

I am blessed with the eye to be able to spot beautiful things including xmms and it is like as if there is a camera build into my head and that is ready to compose and churn out picturisque postcards.

So there I was after getting off the ferry from HongKong airport (transfer via ferry to Shen2hen). The boxes that the crane is lifting contained our luggage that it hauled from the ferry.

Somehow, everything was in place perfect for the picture in my head. The silhouette, the sun, the subjects, etc. Without hesitation, I whipped out my digicam and snapped it.

One of my biggest bane with missing great shot is my hesitant to be trigger happy. There are times at some places where I feel paiseh to be taking pictures. Alas, the split second of uncertainty will result in the the picture moment vanishing into thin air.

As I was looking at this picture, I thought why not do a HDR version of it too and here it is below.

Usually, I tend to favour HDR version of the picture as the colours and tones are more dramatic but somehow, for this particular photo, I can't decide if I like this or the original better.

What about you guys? If you were to choose only one of these two as your favourite, which would you go for?

p.s. Click here for the rest of my HDR Images.

Ed: The thing about HDR is not about the enhancement of "realism". Rather an artistic dramatisation of a composition.

NNPC: Essentially, I tonemapped this HDR to balance the exposure on all aspects of the picture rather than taking an average exposure setting of the overall picture.

Chocolate Gal: An excellent point there. You are right in the sense that all the lit up details distract us from the main subject which is the sunset as highlighted by the silouhettes in the foreground.

Anyway, in choosing a favourite between the two, i always believe that a true photographer will choose the one that captures the feeling he want to protray to the audience upon taking the photo. That's the favourite..
And this is why digital cameras are always good in case you messed up the pic and still got time to take one more.. just one more.. film are like toooooooooooooooooooooo costly.. i used to take 3 photos of the same scenery using different exporsure, just to try out.. and all on film.. that kills me..

eileen: I agree with you on the concept of HDR where I interpret it as a method to painting-tise a photo. Hence, there will be times where it departs away from being realistic.

Chocolate Gal: Taking 3 shots is a good idea to sieve our the best shot but only if the subject is static. I am also in the process of honing my skills to get the perfect shot on a one-shot-one-kill basis.

I think you just solved my question as to why I was mixed feelings about these two shots. I took this shot at a time of not having the HDR in mind. HDR was something that I figured out only recently and that was before the shot was taken.

Hence, in this particular shot, the untouched original gets my vote.

Aloe: Like I said, if you are going for realism, then original version is the way to go. HDR is a way of enhancing a photo artistically along the line of a beautiful painting.

New Glasses

It was one of those crazy weekend parties when suddenly an arm swung right into my face accidentally and bending my glasses all out of shape.

Well, it isn't the first time and I have to say that this pair of Dolce & Gabana glasses has been quite resilient, taking years of my abuse, including an episode where my face was smashed into the side window of a car, cutting my eye in the process.

So anyway, coming back to the latest episode, it was just SOP to bend the glasses back to shape. Usually, it would required quite a bit of strength to bend it back but this time round, the metal felt as soft as Play-Doh.

Uh-oh. Metal fatigue.

Before you know it, the arm of the glasses snapped off and my glasses finally gave up its last breath.
So fast forward to the next day where I was at the optician just outside my place. I chose that place simply because by the look of the shop's interior design, it was the more expensive looking as if they know (or pretend to know) what the f*ck they are selling. Do forgive me if I sound like a snob here but surely you won't want to go to a optician who carry brands that they are just as clueless as you right?

And besides, even the salesgirls here in the atas shop knew nothing about the glasses that they sell except telling me stupid tidbits of useless info, like "Oh, a lot of Ta1wanese chose this frame to make their glasses." etc..

Great. Like that is relevant information towards my purchase decision. So imagine this is what you get from an atas shop, try picturing yourself in those kuching kurak optical shops in the back alley.

Sure, they will be cheaper but are you getting a better deal?

So anyway, I was very much on my own as I shooed them away to let me look see look see on my own before I settled on this pair of Nikon Titanium wire frame. I have seen this frame before and if I am not wrong, Silhouette was the first to introduce the 1.8g frame to the masses as far back as 15 years ago.

Well, the main reason that I chose a frameless specs this time was because I wanted to keep my lens. These are good lens which I have gotten them made at Kwong Shin Optical (excellent service!) with everything thrown in except the kitchen sink like multi-coating, scratch resistant, photochromic etc.

Next I ask, how fast can she do it and to my surprise, she started rambling nervously about how they need to drill the holes, sand the sides, polish the lens, fit the frame, blah blah blah...

Without bother with all her bullshit excuses, I pressed her for an answer which she nervously replied, "1 hour."

It was damn funny, considering the fact that when I asked how fast, I was actually asking her how many days.

Am I the best customer evar, or what?

Well, I am happy with my glasses and their service. It was a tad pricey but also perhaps it was due to the fact that I didn't haggle with them like an auntie at the fish market.

Very unglam lor.

This SalesGirl Got Balls

Yesterday was the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) and it's an official public holiday here in Spitland.

As my rule of thumb, it also marks the start of the summer, of which it ends on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节).

Also another rule of thumb is that whenever there is a public holiday here, stay indoors coz the number of people out of the streets during holidays is really really horrible!

So anyway, it just so happened that our cordless phone at home konked out and we had to send it back to the shop for repair. Thus no choice but to squeeze with people out on the streets.

The shop is like your Best Denki in Singapore except that it is 5 times bigger. So try to picture the number of people in Best Denki on a public holiday in Singapore. Yes, now multiply that magnitude by 5.

Now here's the girl (left) that caught my eye. Business was very brisk and all the sales people have had their hands full trying to close one deal after another.

All except this girl who was glued to the computer monitor. Her booth is one of those promotional booths where customers can go online and download free software, ringtone or wallpaper etc.

I took a closer look and realised that she was chatting on MSN and in full view of the public! Oh the audacity!!

I am not sure if she has no customers because her booth didn't appeal to the public or perhaps customers turned away when they see her chatting online during working hours.

You have to give it to her. This girl's got balls. It was as if she was baiting the management to give her to sack.

Walau! A winnar ish she!

p.s. Anyway, pardon the lousy picture quality and I was using my mobile phone to take it and from quite a bit of distance away lest I get spotted trying to take her picture.

The Scent of Jay

{{{{{ Warning : Himbo Post }}}}}

I was chatting with MsVindicta over MSN when we touched on the topic of men's fragrance. Discounting those teeny bopper Gatsby fragrances, my first "real one" was that of Aramis and have since change quite a few until I wanted to settle down with Christian Dior's Fahrenheit as my signature scent in JC. I have been wearing for a while before I realised more and more people around me starting to smell the same.

Perhaps it is a quirk in me that I do not wish to conform the the masses, it was soon abandoned and again on the wilderness trail of trial and error before settling down again with Davidoff's Cool Water when in University.

That was by far my all time favourite until tragedy struck again when more and more people were sporting Cool Water too. I then switch to Alfred Dunhill's Edition but was soon banned by my buddy's girlfriend coz Ed was wearing the same fragrance.

"You cannot wear Edition!" demanded Ed's girlfriend. "You smell the same, wait one night dark dark I mistake you for him, then how?"

"Then I kio tio liao lor!" I replied.

"You go and die lah! Cannot!! *SMACK!*

Damn.

Haiz, ever since I have not used the same fragrance twice.

My personal preference is spicy, flora, fruity and a trace of musk. I avoid citrus coz I would smell like toilet air freshener and I hated woody.

So yesterday's conversation prompted me to rethink about settling down to a signature scent and to be honest, Davidoff Cool Water is right at the top of my list, given then I haven't smelled that scent on anyone for quite a number of years already. Yeah, being in Spitland for the past 8 years helped too.

Here's what I think I should do. Let's do a poll on what I should get after my current bottle of Chanel Allure.
Let me know although, results will have no impact on my final decision but I just thought I seek some opinions for the sake of reference.

msvindicta: While your point is valid in the sense that the smell will be unique as a result of the mixture with the individual's own composition, wouldn't it be better to be unique right from the start, rather than to have to wait until the effect kicks in later?

At present, I tend to scout for the really old fragrances, the super new one that Singapore hasn't even heard of, or really obscure ones like Victoria Secret's Too Sexy (for men).

For myself, I alternate between two bottles, one of which is in my overnight bag while the other is at home for daily use.

Citrus means lemony smell which is probably the "fresh" that you refer to. Sweet probably refers to flora/fruity which are both sweet smelling. As the word suggest, flora smells a little er... well... flora.

KingMeng: I am not sure but I suspect it's because the poll doesn't show up on some browsers. Oh well, screw that since everybody here is recommending a different fragrance here which is kinda where I possibly would be heading.

Tragic Bike Accident

I got this in an email from my cousin Roy who is based in McAllen, Texas. He told me about this accident that happened just a mere 60 miles away from him, on the other side of the US-Mexico border.

He said that the local people there sort of look down on the Mexicans Hispanics, not because of racism or anything but more often than not because of stupid things like this happening.

A first look at the picture reminded me of those Looney Tunes or Tom&Jerry cartoons where people were sent spraying all over the place like when a 16-pounder bowling ball crashing into the pins at full throttle.

It was funny then but it is horrifying here for these are real people that were sent flying into the air.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at this), there was only 1 fatality. All because of a drugged-up drunk falling asleep at the wheel. Brilliant.

The fact that the cyclists weren't able to get out of the way in time, even when the cyclists were facing the car (i.e. they were not run over from behind and hence the lack of reaction time), comes to show how fast the car was going at them. Now imagine the impact of the crash at that kind of speed. Earlier I mentioned Spitland's Chery QQ car with a EURONCAP of ZERO-star rating. Bicycles are going to be even worse. Ouch.

* By the time, I took this photo, the nanny had already put the razor back onto the shelf.

So curiously I asked what's the razor doing in the kitchen sink.

"It's for this chicken." she replied with a deadpan tone without turning her head to face me as she continue to struggle with the chicken chopping.

Italy Independence Day

Italy celebrated her independence day as a republic on 02 June 1946 and congratulations to them on their 62nd national day.

Some may be wondering why such a random post from out of the blue? Actually, if you seriously think about it, there is a lot of Italian in our everyday lives.
  1. For a start, there are Gucci, Ferrangamo and Prada that represents the epitome of fashion luxuries, sharing the limelight with their French counterparts like Dior, Chanel and Vuitton.

Even the recent moronic bigot Fragrance Prince was gushing about men in Milan all being exquisitely well dress (yeah... even the vagabonds and destitute..... Like I said, moron.) in his recent racist blog entry.
  2. We have always been admirers of German technology like BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche but for some strange reason, it's the Italian makes like Lambourghini, Ferrari and Maserati that are the ones that really take our breaths away. All the stylish designs are mostly the masterpiece works of Italian designer Pininfarina.
  3. Then there is food where as far as European cuisine is concerned, Italian is easily the most popular. Heck, if I were to ask you to name 5 European cuisine that you have dined before, I'd bet Italian would easily be in the top 2.*

    * Try to name 5 European cuisines that you have tried and you'd be surprised how many of you can't count up to 5. And no. Ikea Swedish meatballs don't count.
  4. And there is football where the Italians are the style-meisters of the northern hemisphere with the Brazilian ruling the south.
Ok, this is not meant to be a teenage-girl gush over them. Just that when I read the paper (which are always a day old since they are delivered over from Hong Kong) and I found out about their national day, it just dawned on me how familiar we are with their exports.

The 4 points that I brought up are perhaps one of the many exports that has gained worldwide recognition and that certainly is a remarkable achievement.

It makes me wonder what Singapore have to show for in return?

Singapore has nothing to show. that the truth. they have to rely on free trade agreements to lower the tariffs in order to bring those fashion items, food and cars. the only thing that Singapore can show is Creative lor.

Kia Picanto LX

The last time I drove a car in the CityCar category was way back in the early 90s where I used to borrow my army buddy's Fiat Uno to go give tuition whenever he is stuck in camp on guard duty.

Like the name Uno, this was ONE fun car to drive for ONE person as I remember vividly the car almost couldn't make it when I took in an extra passenger. Ok ok... so I exaggerate.

Then as we grew up, we kinda got caught by the undercurrents of keeping up with the Jones' as we wanted faster, bigger and flashier cars. Well, the good news is that I have gotten past that phase and really focus on what's really important. That is getting from Point A to Point B in a safe, comfortable and economically sensible fashion.

Hence, the car in today's review is the modest Kia Picanto LX.

It's just happened one day a few weeks ago when I was chatting with Vandalin on MSN and I was touching on the topic of how I used to rent cars whenever I am back in Singapore. I told him about Falco-Air which has all along gave me the best deal but I lamented at the fact that I have to go all the way to Sin Ming just to pick it up and then returned it the day before. I also added how nice it would to be like in the US, where you can just drive off from the airport and dropping it off at the airport too upon return.

Yes, granted that there are such services at the Singapore Changi Airport but they are the "branded" rental companies like Hertz and Budget that would you cost you an arm, a leg and some say kidney as most, if not all of their clientele that utilised this services are on Ah Gong Account i.e. the company picks up the tab.

Van The Man must have been God-sent when he offered not only to match Falcon-Air's rate but to also throw in the airport pickup/return for a nominal surcharge.

So come two weeks before my return, I reconfirm my interest with Van The Man who referred me to the lovely chiobu colleague Sheree who is the person in charge of the car rental services. Instead of the category of Nissan Sunny or Proton Wira (stop sniggering!) which was my default category at Falcon-Air, Vandalin asked if it's ok for me to go a notch down to that of a Kia Picanto.

A Pican-what?? *googles Picanto*

Sure. Why not? That's another 10% off. Good deal!

So I landed and took delivery of the car only to realise my big luggage (full of stuff and gifts that belonged to everyone but me. Grrr.....) couldn't fit into the boot, to which Sheree kept apologising. I was amused as I found my situation more comedic than tragic. Oh well, it's just a minor glitch and not something that cannot be resolved as I lugged (no pun intended) the luggage into the back seat et voila! Problem solved.

A quick set up of the GPS on my phone (I remembered to download the maps via PC in advance this time) and it's off I go.

This car is everything that the Mercedes Benz S65 AMG isn't. There is no power, no space and no speed.

BUT...

There were some things that made it up for every short coming. It is a pretty fun car to drive. It was easier on the wallet as far as fuel consumption is concerned. It was damn easy to park due to the small size.

Most importantly...

Faith loved it. She always insisted on riding with me up the car park after we dropped everybody off at the cul-de-sac below, just so that she can have an extra minute or two in the car.

The crunch test came on the Saturday where I was to drive everybody to go swimming. So in that tiny car, we have my mom which was hitching a ride, the wife, the maid, two kids and a stroller. It was almost like the circus firetruck with 25 midget clowns squeezing inside. I wondered if the car can move after the doors are closed.

Wait, can we even close the doors?

Fortunately, the answer is Yes and Yes. The car chugged admirably along CTE towards Holland Road without even a sign of struggle. The following Monday was the same passenger configuration and I was at Ngee Ann City faced with a uphill climb to the 6th floor carpark. The slope was steep and again we were fully loaded.

No problem there either.

A gripe that I have is perhaps the thin shell of the car which made it very noisy on the roads at higher speeds. Very much like the Mazda6 that I rented when I was in Los Angeles back in Oct 2006.

Still, as aluminium tin can as I made it sound to be, it has an better-than-I-expected EURONCAP safety rating of 3 Stars. Granted 5 would have been better but it sure beats the hell out of Spitland Chery QQ car who has the dubious honour of a zero rating i.e. if you crash (frontal collision) the QQ at 50 mph, your chance of walking away unhurt is ZERO percent and you'd probably die at an alarming probability of 70%.*

* Verification needed.

In any case, driving a supermini citycar does has its risk as far as safety is concerned but I supposed a vigilant safe driving habit will help you go a long way. Also with a 1.0L engine, it's hard to go over the speed limit even if I wanted to.

Also, leave the car at home if you are going to be drinking.

Afternote: Yes, it wasn't a fancy car but I am very happy with the rental especially, since I also made a good friend in the process. So, if there is anyone who is interested in car rental services, drop me a line. I'd be happy to make a referral.

I'm not too sure abt the Kia Picanto but I've drove someone's Hyundai Getz & it's +/- around the same. Personally I have an inherent bias (courtesy of the getz) towards these small hatchback cars cos.... 1) jin small. the last i drove the getz, my knee was literally clamping the shaft behind the steering wheel. 2) as u mention, the power... not that i speed, but sometimes it's needed to do lane change but the acceleration comes in slowly...(especially in auto cars) 3) limited seating space... -=> i pity the 5th person if he/she's not a kid.

all in all, gd enuff if can get u from A to B safely... P.S. that time in sch got picanto challenge, the dance society got ard 28~30 petite gals to squeeze into that car lor.... imagine all of us crowding ard to see them squeeze & sweat it out inside...hurhurhur....

CowGoesMoo: Perhaps you are right about bias for I too have one. I guess as a result of no longer having a car in Singapore, the availability of a car in Singapore is a case of no fish prawn also good. As for the need to accelerate during lane change on the highway, there is always the option to flip down to manual 2nd gear to achieve the desired pick up.

Hey,
This is just so timely! And well, I share the same name as your daughter too....interesting. I've been looking around to rent a car when I head back in Aug for a week or so. Maybe will try the Picanto. I had a Hyundai Getz when we were living in Spore. Loved the car to bits. Almost shed a tear when we sold the car.

The Picanto is currently the new family car, and this being the first car that I'm driving around in is pure bliss man. It's so easy to maneuver and park cos it's so small. I'm loving it to bits! I tried driving an 8seater last night, and had to take note to make extra wide turns. I was super afraid I'd scratch the car loh!
