5 Weird Things (Part 3) - Turn Left, Turn Right

In Singapore, the cars are all right-hand-drive i.e. the steering wheel is on the right. So whenever we need to reverse our cars, be it reverse parking or just trying to rectify overshooting an exit etc., we need to look to the back of the car just to make sure that there aren't any oncoming traffic. Granted that we have the mirrors to aid us, I think for the most part, we would turn our heads towards the back for a better view.

Here's the thing, if you are right-hand-drive, you turn your head to the back via the left and for left-hand-drive, you turn your head to the back via the right. As I have been in Singapore for most of my life, I am more accustomed to driving on the right than the left. However, whenever I am overseas on business trips, mainly the US, I would end up on the left side of the car instead.

I remembered the first time I drove a left-hand-drive car. I borrowed my cousin's Toyota RAV4 to go visit a customer in the vicinity. Then at the end of the appointment, I hopped back into the car and was about to back the car (in the US, most folks park their cars head-in first) out of the parking lot when I realised something.

I can't turn my head fully via the right side.

Once I shift the gear into reverse, I instinctively turn my head to the back only to have my seatbelt socket staring right back at me. Oops. I turned the wrong side. Then, realising my mistake, I turned to the other side....

Arrghh...

Cannot reach.

My neck can only go as far as pointing towards the diagonal blindspot behind me. Had it been the other side, I would have been able to turn more. I learned something new about myself that day.

Anyway, after a number of years traveling and driving in the US, I'd have to say that my "neck flexibility" has improved somewhat, although it looks like it may never be as good as turning to the left.

Oh well. I guess I'd have to rely on the mirrors more then.

er.. yah, why ZB wanna sit in that pose har?
That's why when I was in US, I refuse to take the driving wheel. :P cannot accustom la.
Nowadays, I use more side mirrors than neck turning when parking le. Must practice la. Neck turn too much also no good, later neck cramp arh. LOL!

anna: one way is to take the risk and just reverse out slowly without turning yr neck to look behind (hopefully, on-coming cars will honk you if you are backing into their path!)
haha

Heather: That has happened to me all too often, especially with rental cars that you are not familiar with.
I remember borrowing my friends car and this bloke cut me off. I wanted to high beam the bugger to express my displeasure. Instead, I squirted my windscreen with water. Damn fail....

er Jay.. yah.. that's what I did a few times too... so donch worry, u not the only one. :P Continental cars vs Asian cars in SG. Lights and wipers are on different side of the cars so the error loh... haaa!

Anna: Well, it is alright to make the mistake of turning on the wiper when you wanted to turn on the signal light.
It is quite loser lor, i.e. when you high beamed the asshole who cut you off as your proxy equivalent of "flipping the bird" at him but instead, you have the water squirting back at you.
Ow....

U know those leg splits by dancers? Normal people can't do it too, it's through pain, effort and practice. Do it more often and u may be able to do it next time. :)
