Evacuation Of The Blog

I was checking my email yesterday when I receive one from the wife. It was a mass emailed to the ENTIRE WORLD.

Extract:

"Checkout Jay's blog at [my old blog address] for more pictures and updates about our 2 little angels."

I was like WTF!!!!!???
Right away, I knew the dreaded day has finally arrived when I hit the panic button.

ALL HANDS ON DECK!! BATTLE STATIONS!! BATTLE STATIONS!!
I must have rehearsed this scenario for a thousand times already and have more or less a game-plan in place, fortunately.

First thing to do was to immediately shut down the old web address and migrate to a new one. This was done with a single click of the mouse. An invaluable feature available at Blog-City.com. Thank you!

My second task is to go through all my past entries and update all my internal links (i.e. "Click here to go to my other post", etc...) to the new address. This is the toughest of the lot as I have 500+ entries to go through and vet individually. At time of this entry, I have already covered the current 2006 and the entire 2004. I am now left with August to December for 2005. Hopefully I would be able to finish this task by tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

And my final task is to inform and update my regular visitors of the change in address. So far a handful of them have been notified and I have also asked them to spread the word around. Hopefully they are kind enough to do it. Fingers crossed.

If you are reading this, you have successfully made the transition. For that, I thank you. Spread the word around ok?

Taking a step back  and looking back at the situation. I guess I have finally reach the next step of a Blog Lifecycle. I remember when I first started writing back in the 90s and then started this blog (at Blog-City.com) back in 2004, I was telling the whole world with gongs and cymbals to come visit my blog.

It is somewhat akin to a newbie insurance agent who would almost certainly, approach their immediate family and friends first when they started out.

I guess we all needed some kind of a validation to our blog in the shortest possible time when we first created our respective blogs. Perhaps, it was short-sightedness on our part to take the easy route by solicting this validation from the people in our immediate circle. As our blogs mature and the audience-base grew, we realised that we had paid too big a price for this self-gratifying white elephant called validation. Simply way too big a price.

Some one said this to me yesterday, "But a lot of people know about your blog already what?"

That may be true but there is also an equally big (if not bigger) bunch of people who don't.

Here's my problem with people who knows me in real life and reading this blog. I would classify them into 2 distinctive groups. Those who understands why I blog and those who don't. It is this latter group that I want to keep out.

If you are reading this. There is a high chance that you have your own blog, be it known or unknown.  Do you ever get annoyed by these ignorant people who simply think that you were merely following a trend and/or chasing a fad? It bugs me to be accused of  such but it bugs me even more that these people who know me in real life (some for a damn long time), actually know so little of me. The irony of it all is that I have people who read my blog and have never met me in real life before, know me better than these folks.

I guess the bottom line to all this annoyance is that I hate to be judged and especially by one whose yardstick is skewed unfairly against you.

Writing is a passion and hobby of mine. It is a life-long project that I've embarked. Not fad. Not obsession. Not spur of the moment.

To a dear friend who would understand the next line, "I am not engrossed."

Now imagine, you are in the economy-class cabin of a 4-hour flight and you have your laptop switched on and you are drafting your next blog entry. Then you start to notice that the passenger seated behind you is peeking over your shoulder and reading while you type. That annoying feeling is the very same feeling that I get when my blog is being read by people of the latter group.

As much as I don't want to care about what these people think about my writing, I felt constricted. The freedom of expression was somewhat taken away. Writing to me is about freedom. It's about transporting yourself to a secret garden in the sky. Without that freedom, writing would no longer be fun. Machiam like some idiot just built a spanking new McDonald's in it. Nah Beh......

Anyone else have the same sentiment? Know what I am saying?

Anyway, an old chapter of the blog has closed and this new chapter is opened.  Time to face front and take the next step forward.

p.s. Please help spread the word of the new address ok? Thanks.

Afternote (11 Sep 2010) : Well, the blog has moved yet again, this time round to http://www.jaywalkonline.com.

winter: Glad to see you back here. Was just waiting for you to show up on MSN or GTalk in order to tell you. Looks like you beat me to it!

Derrick: First of all, there is no more old blog. It's deleted. Also, the latter group of people don't know me as JayWalk. Those friends in real life who knows of my moniker of JayWalk are already readers of the blog. That's fine with me.
It's like going to a club and you already have the stamp on your hand. The bouncer would gladly let you in.

Haha, I can sympathise. I've had a few close shaves, with some friends almost accidentally revealing my blog, like when something funny happens, they go: "HAHA, you can put this up on your blo-- OEI OEI why you kick my shin!" ;)

LaughingCow: Glad you made it over to the new address. It's been a long time since I last saw a comment from you. :)
I had close shaves in the past and now my friends know my rule that the mention of my blog and myself shall not be under the same roof at the same time.

Jettykey: OMG!!! You have no idea how happy I am to see the word "Jettykey". Damn.... you left me with 7 months worth of catching up to do! *Happy*
Afternote: Oh wait. Make that 5 days of catching up to do. Heng ah.
Buzz me! I am still on Yahoo.
p.s. Acherly hor, the "You can run but you can't hide, works both ways!"

ris: Clever. If you have noticed, there is a voxeros at the end of each blog entry. That is just to train the various search engines into recognising that the word voxeros belongs to me.
What I didn't expect was for them to pick up the new address so fast. I would have expected all the search results to continue to point to the old address.
Oh well. Learned something new today.
